I started building 3d printers in my garage in California in 2010. It’s 2020 and today, William Steele and I will…. start building 3d printers in my garage in Kansas. Good things happen in garages.
@printrbot
It’s official,
@printrbot
is back in business with a new printer that has no equal at this price point. Details at
Its a limited release (USA only) of 99 units at a lower price + free shipping. Gotta walk before you run. Thank you all for your support.
Happy Easter! A day to celebrate THE Resurrection, for sure. That’s the 1st & most important thing.
But I’m also celebrating another resurrection ;)
Printrbot lives, once again! It’s official. We just got an LLC, EIN… working on bank, sales license, etc., but
#PrintrbotLives
.
@printrbot
hello world.
Brook Drumm here. 2.5 months off social media! Ready to talk & tell you what’s up.
Still building 3d printers (contract work for Carl for now: )
Doing Patreon & gofundme soon. Planning a new company…
Anyone still out there?
Support our team that made this sweet little 3D printer :) There is none like it. You think you have "everything"? You don't have THIS... yet. It checks the boxes... easy, fun, affordable($299) and beautiful. Yes, you can hack it & do your thing.
Printrbot gets its assets back today! Crazy roller coaster!!
Looking for a local community member/maker with shop space for a free waterjet I can get access to ;) I have until Friday to get out. Tick…tick… tick
I designed a new printer today. fully printable but unlike my others, uses rails for simplicity. It’s intended to be an option for a project while we are sheltering in place. hopefully a few can be given away to kids or be put to good use. I’ll post the early beta tomorrow ;)
Tomorrow I say goodbye to my old Printrbot HQ shop! I’m grateful to have reclaimed my assets and will be glad when it’s finally over and I’m driving away. Maybe a little sad. Good times there. But on to the next adventure. I’ll share more about that soon.
While I’m self-quarantined off, I’m doing tons of design… Printrbot is in the clear to start over at the end of April! Just got the last 30 day notice of end of bankruptcy a week ago. As long as no one comes out of the woodwork to contest anything…. we begin… again!
Tell my wife what a great woman she must be for hanging in there on 27 years of marriage to me! Anniversary is today. That is one great woman!! Happy anniversary, baby!!
Coming to an internet near you… soon.
Working title: Printrbot Min.
It stands for “minimal”… don’t hold me to it, but it’s fitting for now. It’s mainly 3 parts. Yeah, there is another tiny part that you print twice… but I WANT to say it’s THREE parts.. so I will.
3D printers don’t have to be ugly or proprietary. Years ago, the Simple Pro had a touch screen, one click slicing, a personal repository under your control, printed from a phone or any browser. It printed better than anything I had designed prior. And, I think, it was beautiful.
A quick teaser video about the Printrbot reboot. First printer will be an affordable Printrbelt! William Steele is joining me too! Come get the inside scoop at
The pic is a test design that patrons have access to now ;)
@printrbot
Good things still happening in my garage ;) The spot welder worked great. My bends aren’t the best on the side pieces, but you get the idea. Bill got the electronics sorted & everything pre-fitted. Goal: get a print before he flies out tomorrow;) Feelin good!!
I designed a printer, check it out. I’ll be involved in helping the company with manufacturing too. It’s $299 on Kickstarter. It’s different than many you have seen!
@printrbot
I’ll be producing free content, but asking the community to support it.
I’ll use gofundme to fund my prototype for my new business soon.
A Kickstarter will follow to fund production. Read: no debt & healthy, sustainable growth! I’ve learned my lesson.

Printrbot Min :
Got frustrated with first 2 attempts, so I started from scratch. It could be printed, but would be easy to laser cut most of it. This is half-baked until I get one running and printing. I wanted to share the process anyway :)
Things I learned at Maker Faire today:
1. My people are here. 3d printing geeks, car lovers, flying car lovers even, on & on
2. I will never be able to properly pronounce Tom’s San…lalala (whatever!?)’s last name
3. Printrbot has played small & large parts in many Maker’s lives
If you are the praying type, send one up for my sweet mom. Taking her tomorrow to get the cancer cut out- removing her thyroid. Nervous but expecting good outcomes. One of the hidden blessings of the move last year to be closer to family.
Printrbot CNC is finished. Testing and getting ready to post the first step in it’s launch: bare bones kit (you buy your extrusion and router to save a little money). Price coming soon. I’m really happy with it.

My son is in a welding tech school. He’s working at FedEx and is on track for a scholarship that will pay about a third of his school bill. Proud of him. I’ve been welding for 38 years. He’s about to be better. Love it.
@Printrbot
achievement unlocked! We have a full set of parts! Bill is building while I wrestle w the metal folding with my crappy tools ;) Slow but steady! Bill is a rockstar so all is well!!
Btw: Happy 28th anniversary to my wife!! The best thing in my life by far!!
A mix of flat parts, machined and extruded aluminum. Feel free to pick it apart. Some stuff won’t be obvious. The devil is in the details. This is NOT the corexy I’ve been teasing, just “the thing to get me to the thing” (Halt and catch fire). Brian Roe machined all the parts.
Post Printrbot report… small victory here! I cleaned my garage ;) My wife’s car actually fits now ;) Now I can get some work done! Building/fixing printers for the local Hackerspace tomorrow ;) maybe a livestream???
I’ll share with everyone soon what has taken half my time the last few months. starting an electric motor & motor controller company. About 3 years in the making, this one. We are now manufacturing parts & testing all designs. Going slow, but very cool stuff.
That’s weird… a model from 10 years ago… a concept from someone not involved with the current company. Certainly looks familiar. The name of the design, also. Hmmm.
Thank you, awesome community! Hang in there w/ us. more details are a comin’! We will be building non stop this weekend. Making due w/o all my old equipment is a challenge! But having fun learning what needs tweaking & what works. All our best from team Printrbot!!
I just met with my local metal shop. Proper parts this Friday! That machine should do it….. wow. They said they bend .5” plate. A four-generation business. Had to cut the roof off to get this in. They have lots of modern stuff too. But I love the old stuff!!
Thank you all for the warm wishes. I can count the days left in Cali on one hand now! Crazy how many Printrbot relics I just pulled out of my attic. Man, it’s been a long year. Ready to turn the page. I’ll keep you all updated on the journey.
Brook
Black belt released a version of Cura that makes the Printrbelt sing. different markets, but now I’m confident belt printers will be on the rise soon.... or is it “run”... you get what I’m saying ;)
PEI worked great. Smooth surface and decent adhesion. (Sign of relief!)
The Printrbelt prints w black belt version of Cura! It’s a start! No calibration, hollow (oops!), too fast, no fan, and some other mistakes but, hey, it slices any model and prints!! I’ll take it.
Drill, tap, chamfer, buff, grain, wash, rinse, repeat. Parts to an all metal corexy. Mostly parts. Designing a printer that anyone could build with hand tools. It’s a faster build and better than a reprap with printed parts. Shoot me questions / comments.
Working on a new printr, but here’s a side note: My 1965 VW Karmann Ghia is back in Cali! Brian Roe and I will be converting it to electric with one of my joulemotor dot com motors and one of our controllers. Epic. Maybe the 2006 Boxster will be next!
@printrbot
(Brook) and Fam have to leave California… our personal bankruptcy resulted in losing our house. If you feel like helping out, consider supporting us on or consider a Simple Pro bare bones kit here…
Prusa came by today. Always good to see him. He just stood there a while, staring at the printrbelt. “What is it?” he said.
“It’s a 3d printer.” ;)
I got the biggest kick out of it.
I have an amazing wife. Today marks 26 years married! She surprised me with a flight on this warbird from 1940- loops, barrel rolls, the works! Loved it!!
The Simple Pro v2 will be manufactured in USA by a prosthetic tool maker, purpose built for printing prosthetics. It will use a custom 180 Watt Ubis all metal derivative of his High Temp, but much faster. Every print saves a prosthetist time. It pays for itself in a few prints.
I greatly respect the Voron team. I built one then had to design an all metal corexy w FAR fewer parts. Flat metal, a few extrusions and 6 machined parts. All the normal hardware stuff. My question is: would builders enjoy if the kit is easy to build & has no printed parts?
Too soon? I designed a quick and dirty version in Fusion 360 using the photos from the website. Lots of detail yet to add. 3D printingnit now!
#CyberTruck
Along w patreon to fund content, gofundme to produce a prototype for a completely new market/business & Kickstarter to kick it off, I will be using contract work thru to supplement income until I can form another 3d printing-centered company on my own.

Halloween, circa 1980. Made it myself. Toilet paper roll as an “eye”, coat hangers to form the head.
#80sMaker
@printrbot
Ps: extra cred if you saw the original Star Wars in the theater, like I did ;)
What I learned at Maker Faire:
1. Some people are awesome.
2. The dude that helped me w my Linux issue on a php script for the printrbelt is even awesomer
3. Lots of interest in the printrbelt
4. WiFi at Maker Faire is scary
5. Mark & Dave (employees) are as good as it gets!!!!
My boy, Levi, got a paying print job from his engineering teacher- $10! ;) two kids asked him if they could buy a kit. He’s seeing dollar signs. Ha! We will see if he ups his price on the next one ;) installing a Plus Pro w high temp in his room now. Life is good!
@printrbot
one cool thing about the new Printrbot Pro design is the bottom lid. Easy access. There are holes for alternative electronics platforms too. I made plates for a few popular models so it can look professional. Plenty of room for a RPI if you like. 12V is temporary.
my son is now a sophomore in engineering. They are going over gears! Hard not to overwhelm my son with ideas of what we could print to show the class. His response was, “Dad, this teacher is pretty old school”. Translation: he is old, like me,but doesn’t care about 3d printing.
First things first, mom came through surgery just fine. They took it all, definitely cancer. Sparing details, it’s tough to know if you got everything so she’ll be tested throughout the coming weeks. One step at a time. Relieved to have some progress. She’s quite a lady ;)
While an all-new printer with new hotness is first and foremost, I’m interested in knowing your thoughts on what would be most helpful to support old machines? I am not opposed to sourcing old parts, but there is little that can’t be printed or converted. Ideas? Opinions?
I made an extremely expensive holder for my Pringle’s. ;)
Grabbing a snack while waiting for loctite to dry… the rotor pulled the can out of my hand.
Hilarious.
200Kw motor. Very. Very powerful.
12”x10”x12”… touch screen right now is BigTreeTech TFT35-V2.0 … we are testing to see if this will be the final choice. It has a large community around it and is configurable with custom UI, etc. google it up to check it out. Many are retro-fitting their old printrbots with it.
Three
@printrbot
printing all at once. And TWO of them printing well! Ha! It’s been a while, in this house anyways. Guess I’ll have to tune the old Simple up a bit. Slow is fast. ;)
@printrbot
A little context. Here’s bare minimum tools for the build… hydraulic press, saws, files, hammers, small hand brake, 2” metal pipe, clamps, calipers, hand tools, drill press, blue tape, sharpies, welder, sweat, spit & bailing twine. Oh, band-aids and a stiff drink ;)
Here’s a gokart my son and I are working on. It’s a rolling chassis now. Freebie from a neighbor. It’s inspired me to design an open source electric gokart… w some 3D printed parts of course ;)
Just dropped Bill off at the airport. My “fabulous” metal work took a few things off script. So no prints today. Not discouraged though. We are thrilled w the project weekend. Thank you, Bill, for all the great work & brain power! The steady march forward has begun!
@printrbot
The new, yet to be released Printrbot CNC... in CAD and a 1st beta to check part fit. Lost to share! Price unknown but coming soon. Configurable from small to 4’x8’x4”... it can even be setup to work like a handibot ;)
We safely arrived in Wichita! The search is on for a short term apartment while the house closes and all the legal mumbo jumbo finishes up. I need that to clear out before starting the new business. Patrons: I’ll get back up to speed this week!
@printrbot
The Printrbot Min.
read: "minimal"
Beta v.1. - you've been warned! :) Its 6 hours of printing with my settings... not bad for a complete printer. 100mm xy&z. You will probably need to bolt it to the desk though :) I'll do a video explaining it soon.
FAIL! A couple of deal breakers in my design, but some great learnings. I love the concept of discovery through failure. I excel at this. Time for some tweaks. The good news: there is definitely some good stuff in here too. I am encouraged. This is the fun stuff: problem solving!
I was amazed he put together a wooden Simple w fishing line! So I asked this gentleman, “Jacob, are you completely blind?” He said, “I see blurry shadows, outlines… I saw your beard & knew it was you.”
I knew the frotee would come in handy somehow.. someday ;)
What a dude.
Not selling anything here, just celebrating a new printr-baby with some jazz and a California IPA. Oh, and another REAL grand-baby is on the way soon: ) Life is good.
Going on the record with the Aleph Objects story: as a guy who knows a bit about this…. I wish no ill, but it sounds like the end.
Frankly, I don’t like that fact that news sources are getting clicks on the sad, inside scoop, either!
3d printing and open source is changing.
Thanks everyone! I’m finalizing the first printer… “real artists ship” as they say. We are discussing how to launch. remember, this go-round must and will be debt free! So maybe Kickstarter-type thing, or pre-sales… something. Stay tuned. I have to move fast to survive ;)
I’ll be bending metal for prototypes soon ;) I’ll share the build process on the air over hydraulic conversion of the Harbor Fright 12 ton press. it is a finger brake. It would be awesome to add some Cnc features. I’m $500 in on these upgrades… press was around $140. $640 total
