Y'all let clowns like Kodak Black in the game, THEN try to regulate them. But y'all fucked up by letting them have a mic in the first place. Y'all gotta wear that.
People who don’t have their shit together greatly underestimate how much they impact everybody around them. They think their dysfunction exists in a vacuum.
Unpopular opinion: popular drum breaks should never be retired for the same reason jazz standards should never be retired. They are canon to the culture and important for showing an artists skill. Drum breaks are the jazz standards of hip-hop.
Q-Tip was so ahead of his time with diggin. Every time I stumble upon a record he sampled I’m always amazed that he was only 18 years old and already had that record.
Buckshot from Black Moon speaking about underground artists feeling the need to change it up because the media made being underground seem corny.
I feel this on many levels.
“In blues, you ain’t official until you fifty…”
If you’re a little older and still making or listening to hip-hop music, this clip of Ka is a must watch. I write about him in my upcoming book
The irony of Megan Thee Stallion constantly rapping about finessing dudes out of money while simultaneously getting finessed out of millions by her record label is uncanny.
Completed my first sewing class yesterday where the project was to make this dress shirt. Not perfect but pretty dope. Looking forward to the next one!
Rappers who rap over their vocals should automatically have half of their performance fee withheld and donated to the largest performing arts schools in that state.
you can press up 100 CDs for under $200.
sell them for $10, $20 a piece and bring in an exponential profit.
CDs are not obsolete. don't let social media fool you out of getting a bag!
One of the easiest ways to get out of a creative slump is to read. Even if the material isn’t directly in your field, it can spark an idea that you can apply to your field.
Every ambitious project has a not-so-fun stage where you're absolutely sick of it.
Once you make it thru that part it gets way easier.
Don't get discouraged.
Jazz is one of the most difficult genres to find great samples in because it requires more focus to listen to. They could be doing something boring for 10 minutes straight but minute 10-11 will be the most incredible shit you ever heard

If you ever feel discouraged about not having success when you’re younger, find solace In the fact that my first solo album didn’t come out until I was 30 years old. It’s not a race.
I hate that Mos Def even spoke on Drake. All it does is feed into the stereotype that older hip-hop artists hate on younger artists for no reason.
Artists: just because somebody asks you a question about another artist doesn't mean you have to answer it. Politely decline to…
Which is actually what hip-hop producers do to drum breaks as well. The way Primo used impeach the president on “unbelievable” is different than how Salaam Remi used it on “I know I can” by Nas. Countless examples of breaks being changed and used differently.
If you’re making timeless music or have a classic album under your belt then being “relevant” means absolutely nothing to you. Ppl use that word as an insult to artists to make them think they need to always chase relevance to be successful but it’s not true at all.
Her mother is absolutely right. Never let somebody who grew up on Spotify make you feel bad about keeping physical copies of music that means something to you.
Once you reach a certain age nobody cares about how smart you are. All they care about is whether or not you can execute. And if you can’t execute then you’re not smart as you think you are.
Life is so much easier once you realize that everything doesn’t need or deserve a response. It’s ok to just listen and think in silence sometimes. There’s a lot of strength in that.
Once you understand beat-making at a high level it doesn’t matter what program or gear you use. All of your skills will transfer to whatever tool you’re using at the time and you’ll still make dope sh*t.
Producers: a beat with too many changes in it is difficult to write to and might be why some vocalists don't use your beats. As a rapper and producer, trust me on this. You can always add more changes after the vocals are laid.
Those who got to witness how dope college and community radio was in the late 90’s and early 2000’s got to witness something special. Hard to describe now.
If you’re an artist who loves the art but hates the business, the key to getting good at the business side is seeing the art in it. Once you see that everything will click.
My advice to anyone who feels like they’ve fallen behind: don’t try to get it back all at once. That only leads to more frustration. Small consistent progress is the way.
Not sure why people are so amazed albums are being produced on iPads when most iPads still have ten times more processing power and memory than producers in the 90’s had and they still made classics.
