We [Australia] have got a really long history of being able to remain free from all sorts of different harmful pests and diseases, and that's the reason why we operate such a comprehensive biosecurity system - because we want to keep it that way...

Our country faces #biosecurity risks daily that threaten our health, our environment, our economy... our very way of life. The Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis has protected Aust from biosecurity problems that have plagued many countries.

FUN FACT: Chillies in Thailand, Coffee in Brazil, Potatoes in Ireland and Cacao in Switzerland are all post-Columbian exchange introductions despite the strong cultural links those countries have with each species🤯

FMD may set hearts racing, but good biosecurity protects us from at least 16,925 other things as well - we need to shift the narrative to the 30:1 ROI (i.e., net benefit) of action rather than focusing on the past costs and damages of inaction. @CEBRA_UoM

CFA is part of every community, and for the safety and security of our agricultural communities we all need to be vigilant to biosecurity. Our farmers need us to all do our bit to keep Australia FMD free.

There are at least 12 (prob closer to 20) risk controls in place, or available, to minimise the risk of an FMD outbreak in Australia and work continues to refine them. We've all got a role to play - be alert, but not alarmed.

Lots of talk about the 'risk' of an #FMD outbreak over the last month - up, down, unchanged - how do these relate to the official likelihood estimate of 11.6% over 5 years? And what can we do here, now, to minimise the consequences? - w @CEBRA_UoM https://t.co/NN8o0NJb7e

Own a pet pig? Did you know that it is illegal to feed them food waste containing meat? Just don't do it - your pigs will thank you! (why from 4:00-) https://t.co/5sgW9yxnbn

Lots of talk about the [plausible worst-case] consequences of a hypothetical #FMD outbreak in Australia - but what do the experts that deal with these sorts of diseases every day estimate the likelihood to be, and how did they come up with that number?

Maintaining confidence in our $80 billion agriculture industry is too important to risk. The Senate inquiry into foot and mouth disease and varroa mite is in addition to the strongest biosecurity response in Australia's history from the Albanese Government. #auspol #agchatoz

I was fortunate to be one of the last in a long line of Ag dept. (then DPI) 'cadets' in 2003 - which raised a few eyebrows in my farming family at the time - and it was the beginning of a rewarding career in biosecurity. If you're interested in making difference consider the VPS!
