Commissioner Ray objected to a rushed vote on the pilot curriculum, saying he had more questions. He tried to table the item but was told the current motion must be voted on first. He formally objected to the limited discussion time.

The new admin rule will ensure teachers follow approved curriculum, while allowing vetted supplemental materials. A process for review and accountability is being built with union input. Oversight aims to protect students and uphold instructional quality.

An updated admin regulation is coming to ensure all classroom materials align with state law, board policy, and protect students from harm. SFUSD is working with unions to make it practical and enforceable, aiming for clarity and accountability.

Student outcomes matter—but so does how we treat each other. Ethnic Studies teaches empathy & dignity, values we need now more than ever. SFUSD must bridge the gap between ideals & implementation while ensuring all HS courses have board-approved curricula.

Over 12 years of student surveys show 75–85% say ethnic studies boosts their identity as learners & helps them understand diverse perspectives. Positive impact is consistent across subgroups—more outcome data coming soon.

Ethnic studies aims to unite, not divide—rooted in dignity, critical thinking & inclusion. 12K+ students have benefited in 15 yrs. While concerns exist, let’s fix issues without discarding a course built to empower all. Let’s get this right.

One of the things we’re looking at in the evaluation process is the possibility of 1-semester curriculum options, especially considering future state mandates like financial literacy. This helps us balance student schedules and course access.

Dual enrollment lets SFUSD high schoolers earn college credit through City College courses. These are best suited for 11th/12th graders, require advance planning, and depend on student interest and class size. Students may also enroll independently.

Dual enrollment lets SFUSD high schoolers take college-level courses, like ethnic studies, through partnerships (e.g., City College). These expand options without displacing electives and are part of efforts to individualize learning and meet grad requirements.

SFUSD may partner with City College to expand ethnic studies options via dual enrollment. PD for teachers includes early release Wednesdays. Homegrown curriculum remains under evaluation. Disability inclusion in “Voices” is confirmed.

If the pilot curriculum “Voices” falls short, SFUSD has backup options: it may move forward its in-house curriculum, consider new releases, or revise the pilot plan. A final decision will be made by Spring 2026 with full community input.

Only 7 SFUSD 9th graders opted out of Ethnic Studies last year. The opt-out option isn’t new, and interest is spread across schools—so the district is confident it can support students needing alternatives.

Ray: Ethnic Studies is a grad requirement but treated like a 9th grade mandate, w/ few alternatives. SFUSD says future course options will be built based on student interest, as done with other electives. #SFUSD #EthnicStudies #PublicEducation.
