We need more recognition for postdoc volunteers and our faculty advocates. We also NEED centralized postdoc infrastructure at #uiowa. Silos and gaps in support are limiting postdoc success.
PDAs are postdoc run, who volunteer their (precious) time to ensure our voices reach decision making entities. PDOs ensure our professional and resource needs are met. They are essential and should be rightly funded. Give them your love. We could not do without ours! @bsdpostdoc

Again, we couldn’t have done this without all the postdocs that replied to the survey, we hope we represented you well and we will continue to do so. And all the PDAs and PDOs out there, we see you and we are grateful for you 5/5

As we witness many reports of disenchantment and resignations among postdocs, we hope our paper was able to bring to light some of the ways in which the pandemic has turned our lives upside down and that it is important our voices are heard. 4/5

We hope this paper provides empirical evidence for how important mental health resources, PDAs and PDOs are for the wellbeing of our postdoctoral population and ensures continued funding and support for these assets. 3/5

The impact of the pandemic on postdocs has been tremendous and we show that institutional support plays a massive role in alleviating stressors faced by postdocs. 2/5

9/ Postdocs are often overlooked and forgotten. We wrote this manuscript to make institutions aware of the struggles faced by postdocs during the pandemic and how to help. We wrote this for you #postdocs. We want to continue advocating for you and would appreciate any feedback.

8/ Finally, we found that access to institutional resources like postdoctoral associations (PDA) and postdoctoral offices (PDO) helped postdocs in navigating their careers and personal lives and in ensuring their mental and physical wellbeing during the pandemic.

7/ The majority of international postdocs reported being worried about their residency status and additional stressors due to immigration policy changes enacted during the pandemic.

6/ With lab shutdowns, research disruptions, additional family responsibilities, rescinded job offers etc., not only were a smaller proportion of postdocs looking for jobs compared to a year before the pandemic but postdocs were also less confident in obtaining their career goals

5/ 76% of postdocs reported that the pandemic had substantially impacted their mental health and this was true regardless of the demographic we analysed. Unsurprisingly, the impact was higher in those without access to or unaware of mental health resources at their institution

4/ We are really grateful to all the postdocs that responded to our survey and shared their experiences with us. We generated this word cloud from responses to an open-ended question about the main stressors during the pandemic and it paints a grim picture.
