Leave a reply or DM us with your thoughts on quotas. As a reader, let us know how you benefit from reporters focused on quality over quantity; content over numbers.

Here’s what we’re asking the company for. But we need your support to show McClatchy that our readers don’t want quotas at their local paper.

We say the job is telling stories in our communities. And we don’t want arbitrary quotas forcing us to write worse content.

But McClatchy thinks they should be able to require a certain number of stories per week. The company says that’s “part of the job.”

Readers don’t want reporters who prioritize quantity over quality. You’d rather read thorough, well-done reporting than clickbait.

As we bargain for a new contract, one of our priorities is preventing restrictive quotas. THREAD 🧵

With your support, we believe these 3 priorities are achievable. As we hit impasses with the company, we’ll need readers to show their support. To help us keep your local journalism local & strong, follow, share our posts, check out the link in our bio & stay tuned for more.

Underpaying journalists while paying for AI technologies & keeping the executive staff well-paid is hurting McClatchy’s publications. Talented journalists choose other jobs with better pay, & those already working for McClatchy struggle to make ends meet. We want better pay.

Quotas that require reporters to turn in a hard number of stories per week, or achieve a set number of page views, also result in worse journalism. While our readers ask for less clickbait, McClatchy encourages pumping out content. We want quality to matter more than quantity.

Requiring journalists to use AI without accountability and a clear ethical policy will lead to worse journalism. Reporters live in your community — chatbots don’t. The use of AI should be up to us. We want a guarantee on the ethical use of AI.

We’re bargaining for a new contract with McClatchy. While we’re working toward better terms across the board, we have three main priorities: ethical limits on AI, no story quotas & better pay. THREAD🧵

That means the stories will be shorter and worse, as quantity is prioritized over quality. You deserve stories that reporters put time and effort into. Let’s make the local paper better, together.

Let’s get clickbait out of local news. We are a group of Idaho and Washington journalists, and our publishing company, McClatchy, wants the ability to punish us for not meeting arbitrary story quotas. THREAD
