This is one of my favourites of the Gustav Mahler paintings I did. #art #portraint #painting #Mahler #GustavMahler

Retired from work at Christmas to have more time for the bits I liked best. Today I got down to work on my current big project: writing a book about #Lakes. Here's "A View of Mount Fuji Across Lake Suwa" a woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai c1830, which I hope to include.

Word of the day: “expunge”. I have a lot of redundant links and shortcuts to clean up. #retired

Since the powers that be are temporarily absent and I am in sole charge, the lunch-time dog-walk today was #trainspotting rather than #birdwatching

Also today on the early-morning walk this #Kingfisher sat and posed nicely for us for a few moments before carrying on with its morning business. We are lucky to live in quiet #countryside with lots of waterways: excellent habitat for spotting all sorts of #wildlife on our walks.

It wasn't the #FirstBirdOfMyDay but it was the first to sit up and sing "Good Morning!" to me. #BirdsOfTwitter Good morning from Marbury.

And this has always been one of my favourite Greenland fieldwork images: snapped without stopping to frame or focus while walking across a section of the ice sheet, unclear and poorly framed but capturing the experience. #photography I even got my own glove in the shot!

In #photography as in many things clarity and sharpness are overrated! Few of my favourite pictures are the sharpest. This is one of my favourites from this week: a bit unfocussed, not perfectly placed, but captured the moment for me.

I'm not sure I ever really knew what I was doing in my career. I just got an email from Austria informing me that I made "an indispensable contribution to the effective funding of scientific research in Austria." Who knew. I wonder what I did. #academiclife.
