A final study, not yet published, has found that mortality after many notifiable diseases is elevated for a period of time.

Stacey was also able to link hospitalisation data to notification data to show that the risk of hospitalisation with several complications was elevated following a diagnosis of COVID https://t.co/G877iB3TUD

SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with higher incidence of hospitalisation with several respiratory and non-respiratory conditions. Our findings reinforce the value of COVID-19 mitigation measures...

By linking vaccination status and notification data, Stacey was able to estimate the effectiveness of maternal vaccination against influenza and pertussis in infants https://t.co/LjxqyJkWsv
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Our study provides evidence of the direct effectiveness of maternal influenza and pertussis vaccination in preventing these diseases in infants aged <2 months. The findings strengthen the importance...

She then looked at influenza and pertussis vaccination in pregnancy, showing a significant increase in coverage, but highlighting significant variation in different populations across Victoria https://t.co/WZcGeTatdu

Pertussis vaccination of pregnant women in Victoria has increased, but influenza vaccination rates remain moderate and variable. Structural changes at the system level may improve maternal vaccinat...

Her first paper surveyed the landscape of data linkage across Australian (pre-pandemic): https://t.co/lqHmqdVbn4
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
We identified considerable variation in the use of data linkage to inform communicable disease surveillance and control activities between jurisdictions. We suggest that routinely collected, dispar...

Her work was in making the case that enduring data linkages can inform policy, by demonstrating where data could augment existing surveillance

It was a pleasure (and an honour) to be her primary supervisor - arguably she taught me more than I could teach her about data and epidemiology.

Stacey did an amazing job, considering she was doing her PhD part time while working at the Department of Health, and was pulled back into the COVID response.

Great to see the breadth of work across the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash, during a challenging time for everyone.
We’re thrilled to share our 2021 Annual Report, overflowing with highlights across teaching and research from yet another successful and momentous year in public health. Enjoy! https://t.co/fj9swqs7FY

Amid the other news, a note of the passing of one of Australia's greatest scientists, Dr Ruth Bishop who discovered rotavirus in 1973. This led to the development of the rotavirus vaccine which has saved millions of lives globally. https://t.co/vEexfd7VUY
I am saddened by the passing of one of my heroes, Dr. Ruth Bishop. Her discovery of rotavirus enabled @gatesfoundation & @gavi to develop life-saving vaccines. Today, millions of children are alive thanks to Dr. Bishop’s tireless work.

1/ Reducing hypoxic pneumonia by 29% and pneumonia hospitalisation by 57% will dramatically shape child health in high-incidence countries. This is the power of pneumococcal vaccination. We must do more to ensure equitable access and promote its use. https://t.co/L8t0TpJaO0

Oh no - RIP Paul Farmer, one of the giants of global public health.
#BREAKING: Dr Paul Farmer, a renowned American physician and co-founder of Partners in Health @PIH, has died aged 62. Farmer was a receipt of the National Order of Outstanding Friendship (Igihango), which he was conferred upon by President #Kagame in August 2019.

We don't advise this - it is difficult to draw up 0.1mL reliably (an error of 0.05 mL wouldn't be uncommon), and potential to mistakenly give a full adult dose to a child (known high adverse event rate from early studies)
@suss_mark @PMGPSC @imgrund I just read through the Danish health authorities note on vaccination and it says they are allowed to use both the pediatric formulation as well as the adult in 1/3 of the dose (off label) when the pediatric is not available. They are urging vaccination off all children in Dec.

Watch this to the end - Courtney says what many of us are feeling at the moment.
It's been 18 months like no other for our frontline workers. In an emotional story featured on @theprojecttv, one of our ICU nurses, Courtney joined our head of infectious diseases, Anton Peleg to discuss the past 18 months and the challenges ahead. https://t.co/KC4rAEQUc6

Congratulations Karin on being recognised as an @AAHMSFellow ! @MonashMSDI
Clinical researcher Karin Leder has improved global understanding of risk factors for international spread of infectious diseases. Now she’s working to mitigate health impacts from poor sanitation and climate change in resource poor settings. #AAHMSFellows @MonashUni @TheRMH

Great account of what's involved in contact tracing https://t.co/Etag2GvyHm

A contact tracer needs to be curious, empathetic and prepared to ask the hard questions.

Thanks to David Looke and Rowland Cobbold for organising the series with the organising committee. The irony of a conference on zoonoses disrupted by a zoonosis isn't lost on me!
