We made something new at @clubhouse that our friends have been using a lot. Thanks to all of you who have been helping us test it!. We’re letting more people in today, so wanted to share the blog post, as well as a quick “top 10” faq for new users… 🧵.

1. Ok, tried the new @clubhouse. Found a bug. You and me both! Mind reporting it? There are all sorts of things we need to add and fine-tune. It’ll take some time. But we’re long-term committed to building something great for you and your friends. Watch it get better each week✌️.

2. Why do all the AI Chat previews in the new @clubhouse have the word “thrilling” in them?. We thought it was funnier when they sounded like movie trailers.

3. Isn’t @clubhouse dead?. Not yet! At @clubhouse we root for our friends to succeed and we’d bet on our team any day. We have years of runway in the bank and millions of active users. We are going to stay heads down building.

4. What about @clubhouse creators?. We’re moving to a “friend” model, but if you’ve built a following here, you will not lose it. You’ll be able to migrate them to a house and we will work alongside you to ensure it’s a smooth transition. Chats will be a new tool for you too.

5. Does @clubhouse still have live rooms?. Yes! Live is great. Hanging with friends late into the night. Laughing. Low-TAM jokes! Not going away. Adding async just makes it much easier to see stuff from friends when you open the app, instead of whatever rooms happen to be live.

7. Why would you want friends to be able to “drop in” on your voice notes?. It’s fun? Think of when friends drop by your dorm room, or you see an old friend at a party. With more of us living/working remotely, we need places where we can bump into friends unexpectedly.

8. Who can join a Chat?. You can be more private, but the default is "friends-of-friends.". This creates a nice house party vibe, where everyone has shared social context and feels accountable. No dunking or doom scrolling. It’s for people who value friends over followers.

9. What does a Chat look like?. Like your group texts and Stories. had a baby? You can see friends' faces, speed them up, read transcriptions, swipe and tap through. People say more. You hear each other laugh. You get to know each other. They’re designed to be fast and fun.

10. So the new @clubhouse is voice notes?. Yes! But you can see when friends are sending them & join in. So it’s more like a voice note party where friends can stop by — and bring their friends. Is “social messaging” a thing? I’m not sure. But we call the new format a “Chat.”.

This is the note we shared with our team — all brilliant, creative people who any company would be lucky to hire. As a founder you dream of working with people like this. We hope to make them proud by sharing the next evolution of Clubhouse with you soon.

This is about resetting to be a smaller team, focused relentlessly on product. We have a clear vision for where we are headed and significant plans to evolve @clubhouse. But we need to be a small startup again to focus and move faster.

Today @rohanseth and I made the difficult decision to significantly reduce the size of our team and say goodbye to a lot of amazing teammates. This isn’t about the macro environment. This wasn’t a financial decision. We have plenty of runway….

Next year, I'll be going back to Y Combinator as President and CEO. It's a one in ten billion lifetimes kind of opportunity— YC gave me my start, and I'm deeply grateful to the community.

Finally, if you’re interested in the mission, come build with us! My teammates are brilliant & humble and it’s amazing to us that we get to work on this thing. Ok, Twitter UI is suggesting I make this a newsletter, so that's it for now. Thx for reading!.

If you run a public show on @clubhouse, keep doing it! More people joining Houses = more people jumping into your rooms… and a lot of interesting new ways to connect intimately with your listeners.
