Longer winter is ahead! 16 out of 28 groundhogs agree so far. Remember, a simple majority is all we need, but early voting favours longer winter due to the icy weather on the east coast. Stay tuned to https://t.co/hMpyAy8XtX for all your official Groundhog Day predictions!

Early votes are in! 2 groundhogs say longer winter, 1 says early spring. Expect more updates tomorrow throughout the day as the final counts are coming in, but for those of us looking for an early spring, it is *not* looking good. Follow along on https://t.co/hMpyAy8XtX!

@CDS_GC @taxpayerDOTcom At the end of the day, this is a win for taxpayers. The government is not _requiring_ use of this service — use it if you want or use something else, up to you. In our research, we found many people would benefit from this. https://t.co/XPivMdoXpp Hope that helps!

@CDS_GC Tax filers were often worried about scams, and about giving their financial data to 3rd parties. Contrary to @taxpayerDOTcom's post, many filers would actually PREFER a 1st party government-provided filing avenue. Particularly one that makes filing streamlined.

@CDS_GC The major takeaway was that, for many, tax filing is a _confidence_ problem — not an 'gov will eat my burger' problem. Filers are worried they will make a mistake and assume they will be heavily penalized if they do. Many simply do not file, and miss out on benefits.

Wrong! I worked on a @CDS_GC team that did research into low-income Canadians' filing habits and sentiments, and we learned that many would _prefer_ a government-provided auto-filing option. short 🧵 on what we learned
BREAKING: Carney plans to give CRA more power with automatic tax filing. Trusting the taxman to do your return is like trusting your dog to protect your burger. CRA acting as both tax filer and tax collector is a serious conflict of interest. Stop the CRA power grab!

Big news for Canadian tax filing enthusiasts! I spent ~18 months working on an automatic simple-tax filing prototype with my team at @CDS_GC. We found that tax filers often lack confidence to file on their own and many would prefer a government alternative. Awesome to see it!
Canada’s new government is focused on bringing your costs down. Today, we’re announcing the launch of Automatic Federal Benefits for up to 5.5 million low-income Canadians, we’re making our National School Food Program permanent, and we’re bringing back the Canada Strong Pass

CRA has been in the news lately for poor response times and some enterprising civic tech developers even have built ‘bandaid’ solutions like https://t.co/qZ6zBYrkzq (over 65k questions answered!!!!) Auto-filing is a much better solution for most people!

From CRA’s own statistics: - 60% use EFILE: someone does it for you - 33% use NETFILE: which means you do it yourself - 0% (!) of Canadians file through automated methods (rounded down) https://t.co/q5BSYj8iTa So there is lots of headroom for automatic filing. Keep going!

CRA is doing a consultation on automatic tax filing — take 5 mins and tell them what you think! https://t.co/T2Z7yavcRU Note that you have to scroll down and click a link to actually do the survey.

Absolutely WILD tax filing PSA for you today. Some people who earn money ILLEGALLY also AREN'T REPORTING IT on their tax return. This is UNFAIR to law-abiding Canadians, who rely on important government services. https://t.co/XXvW3TvVRu
