Excited to see my #JMP in the @WorldBank DIME Blog today! Many studies show short-run effects of agricultural shocks on violent conflict. My JMP asks: what about the long-run? I find that desert locust swarm exposure persistently ↗️s conflict over the next 14 yrs. A 🧵 1/13

My students were super engaged and laughing today-in a lecture about multicollinearity and omitted variable bias! It felt amazing. As a PhD student I feel pushed to just focus on research. But I’m getting my PhD in large part bc I want to teach! Glad I’m getting to this semester.

Pierre Biscaye is a development economist at the intersection of labor & env economics. His jobmarket : severe shocks to ag production lead to increase in the risk of violent conflict, with evidence that this results from a productivity trap. Web - Page:

Don’t submit your WPs to a short paper track. Most don’t allow R&Rs, which greatly limits the editor’s flexibility. Evan editor indicated my WP would have been R&R in regular track but had to reject. Subsequent editors all suggest I submit to that first journal - but I can’t🤦‍♂️

If you’re going to get an infection, better it happen in France. Or at least, not in the USA. Went to urgent care, was seen in 15 minutes, and paid 50 euros for a doctor’s exam, blood work, and an ultrasound. You barely get in the door for $50 in the US.

@UCIGCC @matanock @CEGA_UC @PrincetonSPIA @ESoConflict @clubmodel @EthanKapstein @ethanbdm @JoeFelter The best moments to me were meeting new people and getting to talk in the breaks between sessions. So many great folks at #ESOC2022 . Also, the cookies were some of the best I’ve ever had! 🍪😋Since I’m here in Berkeley I have to ask - where did you get them??

Highly recommend attending! A fantastic experience learning from generous and engaging leaders in EEE, and great to meet lots of others getting started in their research and to give and receive feedback on ideas.

@KhoaVuUmn How are you getting 2 hours before they wake?? My only productive time with two littles is the few hours after they sleep, even though I’ve always been a morning person.

Point guns at unarmed kids first, don’t even bother to ask questions later even as everyone around tries to explain the situation to you? What the hell kind of training are these police getting??

Santa Clarita, California: Three black teenagers were being attacked by a homeless man and witnesseses called for help. When police arrived they pointed their guns, and arrested the kids who needed their help. Terrifying them. On brand. Exhausting...

Saw her torch UW in the PAC-12 tournament as a freshman and she’s just kept improving. Can’t wait to see what she does the rest of this season and hoping she stays healthy! 🏀 🔥 🏀

In a year highlighting white privilege in so many ways this is one of the biggest: white people make the rules that keep them in charge of the political system. White voters put Trump in the White House and want to keep him there to hold onto to their precious white privilege.

Democrats have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections. That’s never happened before in US history. Maybe the problem is not that Democrats are out of touch with ordinary Americans but rather that America has a terribly unrepresentative political system

I’m at a loss. This is horrifying. How does this country allow white people to run around with automatic weapons MURDERING people and then stand by as police MURDER Black people because they *might* have a gun or don’t cooperate??? Fuck guns and fire all these racist police.
