•Older adults showed higher ΔVZ and lower VORT than young adults. •A reduced VORT in older adults may be a compensatory strategy adopted to constraint the MTC.

•A multi-joint synergy (ΔVZ) stabilizes the minimum toe clearance (MTC) in walking. •ΔVZ is higher and variances (VUCM and VORT) are lower at MTC than in the first half of swing phase. •The ΔVZ and VORT reduced in young but not in older adults when walking in fast speed.
