Interesting: "We found that 1) people from cultures with short sleep durations do not suffer from more negative health outcomes; 2) the optimal amount of sleep duration varies between cultures, and 3) people whose sleep duration is closer to their cultural ideals enjoy better.

Really strange that this is even controversial. Europe needs to do better. I say this as a native Swede.

Why do these threads on cost-effectiveness never mention the fact that drugs go generic?.

@Medscape Unless someone could, you know, negotiate with the drug companies of pharmacy benefit managers to reduce the cost of these drugs so they become cost-effective. One can dream, I suppose. .

Reminds me of the joke that all microbiome papers have their mechanism dependent on SCFAs. Or for metabolism, if you can't figure out the details, it will almost always be mTOR dependent.

I love deep research. But I have to say I find it hilarious that an "outstandingly good" research report from Deep Research has one of the key insights that we should study gut microbiome dysbiosis and butyrate in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Granted the UI for walkinlab is garbage in comparison, but I do like that it gives me full control of the specific tests I want. Also, some tests don't need to be taken longitudinally. E.g. Lp(a) only needs to be measured once in your life to understand it's impact on your CVD.

I've used them to measure e.g. Lp(a), ApoB, and homocysteine. Couldn't get them covered by insurance.

I really do think more people should be aware of walkinlab ( before wasting money on Function Health if they want to experiment with blood tests.

Worth noting the dose they give mice here is 4g/kg ip. So completely different from your standard oral supplement which is like 1-3g total.

This is a good take. I would also add that capturing value to create a venture-scale outcome from these tools will be far from trivial. As we have seen with all tools in biology.

One of the remarkable things for me about NeurIPS this year was how quickly the entire AI for Biology community has gone all-in on biological foundation models. Virtual cell models will enable us to predict how cell states will change in response to chemical perturbations.

Gives a glimpse to a world where we could provide replacement cells and organs off-the-shelf without immunosuppression. That would be a remarkable world to live in. Looking forward to seeing the follow up at later time points.

In my 40 years of biotech, I was waiting to see this result. Never before have transplanted cells survived normal immune response without immunosuppression. Excited for patients, many whom I know see hope today for a possible cure for many diseases.
