Happy Birthday to Winnie the Pooh! On this day in 1926, the original novel written by A. A. Milne was released. The Hundred Acre Wood is based on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. You can still visit the Bridge, where Milne and his son used to play Poohsticks together.

On this day in 1996 Bogotá announced a new plan to deal with jay-walkers: they would be hauled to the side of the road and ridiculed by mime artists. On the same day, readers of the Clothes Show magazine voted John Major the person they would least like to see in his underpants.

I’m looking forward to reading the new book by Justin Lewis @WhenIsBirths. #IntoTheGroove is a month-by-month guide to 80’s pop music. It has some fantastic facts, including that Haircut 100’s Nick Heyward, used to work in advertising and designed the Ready Brek cereal packet!

On this day the 9th of October in 1997, Peruvian witch-doctors cast spells to bring misfortune to the Chilean football team in the crucial World Cup qualifier between the two countries. Despite that, history records that Chile won the match 4-0 so they qualified and Peru didn't.

On this day in 1999, a survey for the National Farmers’ Union discovered that playing music, increased egg production in chickens. I’d like to think that Bob Dylan was included in their playlist. #LayLadyLay.

Remembering the #Kent comedy actress Hattie Jacques, who died 45 years ago today. She was born at 125 #Sandgate High Street. In the 1960’s, she and her husband John Le Mesurier lived at Trinity Square in #Margate. My grandparents lived next door and said they were both lovely!

The 500th edition of the BBC music show Top of the Pops aired on this day in 1973. Cliff Richard's performance was interrupted when the stage was showered by wigs. The culprits were The Who's roadies who had become bored and raided the props department at Television Centre.

Today is the anniversary of one of the odder news stories of the 90’s. On the 2nd of October 1991, Ron Chassidy (who had been jailed for not paying his poll tax) was released, after a 'whip-round' at his local pub so that he could play in a dominoes match!

On the 2nd of October 1997, Czech police found an “exceptionally well forged” 1,000-crown note in the town of Jablonec. All that gave it away was that the words ‘Forging of notes will be prosecuted in accordance with the law' had been replaced by 'This note is a fake!'

Today in 1967 the UK’s first National pop radio station, BBC Radio 1 was launched to take over from the pirate stations, which had been forced off-air by the Government. Former pirate DJ Tony Blackburn was the first presenter on air. He’s as popular nowadays as he was then!
