Today in 1937 saw the first issue of the Dandy comic. A copy of that first edition is now worth around £5,000. The closure of the comic on this day, the 4th of December 2012, coincided exactly with its 75th anniversary. Desperate Dan had a fan club of over 350,000 readers.

The change at the border between President Biden and President Trump is nothing short of staggering, and two numbers best tell that story: 189,604 and 20.

On this day in 1976, high winds disrupted a photo shoot for the Pink Floyd album cover Animals. The giant inflatable pig, that had been tied to Battersea Power Station, suddenly broke free and floated away. It eventually landed in a cow field at #Chilham, near #Ashford in #Kent

Remembering the professional wrestler Shirley Crabtree, widely known as Big Daddy, who died on this day in 1997. He became a national icon and a household name in the UK during the 1970’s and 1980’s. One of his last matches, in December 1993, was at the Winter Gardens #Margate.

With December approaching fast, we’re already looking ahead to next Spring. Our Gardening Guru, Jean Griffin is back in the studio with me after 10am today on @BBCRadioKent, @BBCSussex and @BBCSurrey. Jean has plenty of ideas and recommendations for bulbs we can plant now.

In Vancouver on the 29th of November 1996, today was declared ‘Buy Nothing Day’ by several groups, said to be fed up with the commercialisation of Christmas.

It's National Tree Week and to help we're creating a new hedgerow on Eco Island by planting 400 native trees! Despite the chilly weather, our hard-working volunteers have been great in lending a helping hand. Make sure you keep an eye out and see what local critters move in!

I’ve just had an email from a PR company, offering a guest to talk about scams. They always say that you should be on the lookout for bad spelling, before clicking on a link. Which, in this case is ironic.

This day in 1920, saw the birth of actor Harry “Buster” Merryfield, best known as Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses. Sir David Jason has said, if he could keep one episode of the series it would be The Jolly Boys Outing. It was filmed in #Margate & #Ramsgate in May of 1989.

At 6.30am on this day in 1983, the Brinks Mat security warehouse at Heathrow was robbed of £26 million worth of gold bars, weighing three tonnes. The Gold, a star-studded dramatisation of the events is still available on @BBCiPlayer and there are plenty of #Kent connections.

Yesterday, I posted the TV schedule for the 24th of November and invited you to guess the year. The guesses ranged from 1980 to 2010. Congratulations to @MarkThePunter and @sparry951 who both correctly identified that it was 1995. Thanks to everyone who played along!

Remembering the former football star George Best, who died 20 years ago today at the age of 59. He was a talented and charismatic player and became one of the first celebrity footballers. As the old quote goes ‘Maradona good; Pelé better; George Best.’

15 years ago today, weather forecasters were warning us of a prolonged cold spell, which could bring significant snowfall. A few days later they were proved correct. Snow covered the county of #Kent from #Dartford to #Deal and the Royal Military Canal at #Hythe froze over!

I’m in the supermarket at the moment (other supermarkets are available). It occurs to me that this company has missed a trick. They should also be manufacturing a body wash, called Knees and Toes.

Bluebell Hill stretches between Junction 6 of the M20 and Junction 3 of the M2. It links #Maidstone and #Medway. It is said, by some people, to be one of Britain's most haunted roads. Danny Robins has been in #Kent to investigate the stories, for the latest episode of #Uncanny.

Today in 2012, an abseiling Santa Claus at the Broad Street Mall in Reading got his beard tangled in the rope, leaving him dangling above the crowd for 30 minutes during a Christmas lights switch-on event. Army personnel were called and successfully freed him from the rope.
