There's no perfect story/rep. Characters can believe whatever, but *writers* should know certain kinds of pain are just pain/tragedy. No one needs to love the cross they've been nailed to in order to love themselves. This is especially true for scapegoated minorities. 10/10

Lucifer is urban fantasy, but trauma is real. Abandonment is an Adverse Childhood Experience. With enough ACEs, life can end up on hard mode. Worth exploring in fiction? Yes, if you can respect these aren't just "fun" devices, if you won't endorse trauma as a life lesson. 4/10

Preaching that pain serves a purpose helps insulate abusers and encourage apologists. It's a message beloved of the status quo. Meanwhile, the world improves when we decrease suffering. We decrease it by acknowledging some pains are only harmful, never "character-building." 9/10

There is trauma you *can't* learn from because not all pain is imbued with meaning. For victims, real or fictional, believing otherwise is a coping mechanism in an unfair/unjust world. Those writing about trauma, self-harm, -isms, etc. need to understand this. 5/10

Totally understand wishing the story had been treated with more respect, finesse, and fun, but the coldness and distance in 5B/S6 *were* their "love letters." Unrealistic to think they have the skill or interest to do right by the characters, especially female characters. 2/3

Jildy have told us who they are as showrunners/writers. If you like it, by all means, ask for more during a writers' strike (good luck). But if you were skeptical after 5B/S6, there's no reason to think they'll write a warmer, less nihilistic, less contrived story next time. 3/3

The update is that Betsy's still there. Moreover, regardless of whether OTW/AO3 can practically hinder AI, they won't ideologically oppose it as it is now, which harms fans and professionals. Their "opt-out" stance on AI is a far cry from being pro opt-in.

By comparison, when artists rightfully went, "Hey, wtf?" to DeviantART dipping a toe into allowing AI datasets to use artists' works, they responded by opting OUT all art by default. OTW/AO3 is failing writers more than DeviantART failed its users.
