My first book was published this week with @OUPReligion. It blends sports history and religious history, telling the story of a movement that transformed how Christians relate to sports in the US (and beyond). I had a ton of support along the way with this project, and I gave

I remember this! In 2015 I was in the 2nd year of my PhD, just starting to research the dissertation that eventually became my book. I hadn't written a single word. But when I met John at a Baylor conference and started telling him about the project, he was super encouraging.

@p_emory I remember a conversation w/ you (was it during an event at Baylor? I'm not sure) ages ago, when you spoke w/ great enthusiasm about the project (I don't think you'd started writing at that point). Wonderful to see this reception.

With college football kicking off today, give this piece a read. It's a deeply personal reflection from @KGatBU, and yet it gets at the heart of what makes sports special: the way it connects us with our family, friends, and communities.

Also, I personally think “religion and sports” should be a standard course offered at every university. Crazy that it’s “unique” to study the intersection of two of the most significant cultural forces and sites of identity formation in modern life.

Several people have asked if I’m responsible for the Baylor class. I wish I was!. I do teach a class called “Sports and Christianity in Historical Context.” But mine is a grad class. My friend Andy Meyer, who is awesome, teaches the undergrad religion and sport class.
