Ministry of Education (who is also responsible for Child Care) sent a memo out last week directing centres to deny school age children space during the school day.
Because it is all about the kids, right?
Lecce gives not a fig about kids or families or clearly anyone’s rights
We will not allow our rights to be legislated away. They may have a majority in the legislature. We have a majority across the province. We will take a stand and do everything we can to defend workers' rights and to defend public education.
A 13 year old student was asked to change their shirt today for Queen’s Park Question Period. because it was purple. Seriously.
The government that works for workers & cares about kids is monitoring children’s clothing choices.
This is your Ontario

Hey
@fordnation
you didn’t have the dignity to be in Queens Park to vote to strip the rights of education workers? It’s clear who needs new leadership- not the the unions but the people of Ontario.
#AbsenteeLeader
If
@fordnation
&
@Sflecce
think that they are on the right side of history they are living in an echo chamber.
The propaganda that is being churning out by
@PCPressOffice
tells a tale of insecurity.
But this display of solidarity from
@opffa
is absolutely amazing!
#RepealBill28
Honestly - because we didn’t see this coming.
This was never “about the kids” for Lecce, this was ALWAYS about feathering the nests of big business buddies & donors
The diverting of public funds to private school- so predictable.
Welcome to the “fuck around and find out” stage of the pandemic folks. Pardon our language but we have no other words to describe the ridiculousness that was just spouted. Oh and
@Sflecce
&
@fordnation
not showing was a real class act. Excellent leadership
Legislation uses the “Not Withstanding Clause” on the Charter & Human Rights Code
This was never about Education Workers. This was about stripping away the rights of workers in Ontario.
The line is drawn.

We can think of several other choices Stephen.
Why is it that you are choosing the route of the bully, the aggressor & the coward?
Are you unable to negotiate a fair deal? Or is it that the power growing amongst workers & communities is frightening?
We are ready to bargain, you?
We are at the table. We are focused on a deal that works for workers, students & families.
Kids are in class.
Don’t take advantage of our good nature. We need Bill 28 repealed & a good deal that pulls us out of low income & provides real services for kids.
Why the delay?
NEW - Why not recall the legislature now to repeal bill 28 now, Ford is asked. Premier says he will do it and that CUPE should “Put a little water in its wine“ as he has done. CUPE told CityNews yesterday that it would prefer the bill withdrawn now.
We see Ford’s snowstorm Samaritan act,but we want to amplify the men & women who reported to our schools,our hospitals,our childcare ctrs,our road maintenance & paramedic hubs etc.These ppl don’t get the media attn but they also don’t disappear-let’s focus on the real heroes
As to
@Sflecce
claim that our proposal is larger is larger than the entire education budget of Saskatchewan - the entire population of Saskatchewan is 1.174 million. The population of Toronto alone is 2.93 million.
🤔🤔🤔 again not the flex you were hoping for Stephen.
Blaming the delays at Pearson on COVID screening is a lovely way to gaslight away from the fact that corporations are choosing profit over people. This is not a screening issue but a staffing issue. People need to be hired & paid a proper wage - check out the financials
#onpoli
Does anyone get the feeling that Lecce just assumes he will get whatever he wants?
He has officially spent more time on trying to strip workers rights. & silence worker voice than he ever did on negotiations.
@Sflecce
get off the media & come talk to the workers
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the provincial government is calling on the Ontario Labour Relations Board to officially declare a Friday walkout by tens of thousands of education workers illegal.
We would love
@Sflecce
to share how he feels that less than $20 a week increase is “fair and reasonable” in the face of food costs which have increased over 9.2% in the last year and shelter costs are up over 7% in the same period.

CUPE Education Workers have put forth a proposal that is affordable, reasonable & necessary. In response

We have just received a copy of the decision striking down
#Bill124
! Our team is reviewing & will be providing further information as to impacts as soon as we can.
Hearing the vast majority of boards will not have neither the N95 masks nor the HEPA filters for Jan 5. So why the 2 day delay and where are the extra levels of protection that Dr Moore claimed yesterday?
Hearing across the province that if no teacher available class will be “assigned” to an EA or ECE & an unqualified person will be brought in to backfill. Parents was this what you were envisioning when asking for a return to school? Is this even safe?
A little birdie told us that someone’s Parliamentary Assistant made a donation through Give Send Go to the “Freedom Convoy”
@fordnation
if this is true, will sanctions be taken on this young MPP?
We find it interesting that
@Sflecce
claiming we wanted a strike before seeing their proposals. On July 25 Lecce was already talking about strikes & our proposal weren’t passed until Aug 2.
Remind us again who started the strike talk? /1
This question has come in a lot this weekend and frankly we don’t have the answer. If schools are safe for all, why are education centre & board office staff (sr admin) all working remotely? These folks can social distance & there are less people. Any thoughts?
#OntEd
Oh Stephen, the most qualified education workers & teachers aren’t even applying due to wages & working conditions. Both items you could correct.
Instead our schools are flooded with unqualified folks trying to help out
#OntEd
Fun fact:
No you offered 8% over 4 yr for those making < $40000. Otherwise it’s 5% over 4 yrs
You don’t pay our full pension- workers pay 50%
And we don’t have 131 sick days - we have 11. We have a STDLP at reduced pay which you are seeking concessions on.
#QuitLying
We've offered over 8% over four years to workers. We're maintaining the most generous pension and benefits, and 131 paid sick days.
Our focus is getting a deal with all of our education partners that provides kids and their working parents the stability that they deserve.
We have just learned of the loss of a caretaker to COVID yesterday. They were member of
@CUPE1196
, York District School Board. We send our thoughts and condolences to their family and friends as well as their colleagues at Local 1196.
Funny in April ‘19,
@fordnation
response to a student peaceful walkout without displays of racism & hate was to blame “union thugs”
Flash forward to Jan ‘22 while nazi flags are flying & ppl are urinating on statues in Ottawa, Ford is dead silent. Oh btw his daughter is among them
Friday afternoon
@PeelSchools
announced quietly that any vacant or unfilled clerical jobs (that they didn’t bother to fill) would be cut. Job postings will be rescinded.
That means less people ensuring your kids get to school safe. This is why we fight.
Good to see that
@fordnation
came out of hiding to blame teachers unions. Just an FYI no one wants schools to open more than education workers. We do require that schools open safely. 3 lockdowns shows you have failed to do so!

It is clear that not only is worker power growing in our workplaces throughout the province, but that workers are clearly saying YES to a government and the employers who continue to say NO!

NEW: The Ford government is willing to repeal the entirety of Bill 28, contract + notwithstanding clause.
BUT the government isn’t recalling the legislature yet to repeal.
“Not until we get a guarantee from CUPE that they’ll let kids back in the classroom.”

Quit worrying about spinning the story & bargaining in the media & focus on the task at hand. We are.
“I have not met a parent in this province who has not been clear in their expectations.”
@osbcucscso

Oh facts are hard for those carrying water for Doug & Stephen.
Only workers in a pay band who earn less than $25.95/hr or salaried for less than $43000/yr will get 2.5%.
The vast majority will get 1.5%
Park your spin, read the facts - we don’t need to ask for RT but feel free
The average collective bargaining wage increase this year according to StatsCan is 1.8%.
The Trudeau government is offering federal workers - mostly women - 2% a year over 4 years.
Ford is offering 2.5% a year to CUPE.

Preparing students with real life & job skills.
We are investing $4.8M to expand the Dual Credit program to help 1800 additional high school students graduate into good-paying careers in the skilled trades.
Critical to 🇨🇦 future prosperity.
Families do need more money! However these funds should NOT be coming from the Education Funding. Imagine how $250 million in additional EA supports could support student success or how that money could ensure more kindergarten classes have a DECE. What about speech supports?
Hey
@fordnation
13845 people voted for you. Over 3 times more frontline CUPE education workers voted to support the proposals on the table & denounce your pass.
You are at work today because their power scares you. We don’t need new labour leaders we need new MPPs & premiers!
NEW - Premier Ford addresses his plan to impose a contract on CUPE and the impending strike on Friday. “There is only one party in this chamber that’s standing up for parents and students“ he went on to say “I think the labour needs to find new labour leadership”
CUPE OSBCU Education Workers are focused on winning the stability & services the students & families need when they return to school.
Instead of demanding that meetings w/ workers cease.
@Sflecce
should be directing his team to come to the table with increase to funding & wages.
Again
@Sflecce
you have NOT reduced all secondary school classes to 15!!
@fordnation
just reminded you not to be Toronto-centric Truth is 48 of 74 boards will have full class sizes!! That’s the majority. Tell the truth!!
Just a reminder that the courts & govt will not save workers or anyone. At the 11th hour Ford chooses to waste taxpayer $$s again.
Organizing at the grassroots is how workers get ahead. Time to make this work a priority for 2023.
#WorkerPower
Hearing from members that

The party that is “working for workers” won’t meet with workers? Was this protocol for other unions or just Ed Workers?
#OnPoli
UGH - Dr Moore - we feel that changing the isolation to 5 days reduces the burden on peoples livelihoods. No Dr Moore - paid sick days reduces the burden on peoples livelihoods which in turn reduces the burden on Public Health - tell us again what you are actually concerned about
Now that we have stopped laughing. Give us a break Stephen. We didn’t need incentive, we need access! Quit making it out like we are the offending party. We have been back to work for a week. How about you?!
Over 4 million Ontarians already got a booster shot.
To further incentivize education and child care workers to do the same, we have opened 10 additional clinics across the GTHA.
With even more access points being organized across Ontario.
We are not organizing to strike - we are organizing to build worker power. Something a government who is “Working for Workers” should understand & respect!

Perhaps
@RodPhillips01
should have to quarantine without pay. That was the message (threat) sent to al education workers pre break by school boards - choose to travel then quarantine without pay. Why should we pay for his quarantine?
This reeks of privilege-Ontarians aren’t sure how they will afford the lockdown or rent as Minister who has provided $0 financial relief is chilling on day 15 of St. Barts vacation during a lockdown.

We can’t even! The master of lack of planning, he who refuses to collaborate with those who work on the front lines, would like the federal government to collaborate and plan ahead! Oh
@Sflecce
real planning and leadership starts at home. We are still waiting to chat!
To keep schools as safe as possible next year, Canada will need a plan to procure vaccines for students under 16 years old.
I’m calling on the federal government to plan ahead so that Canada is positioned to lead the world & defeat this pandemic.
On behalf of LiUNA we call on Minister
@Sflecce
to revoke anti-union legislation and restore the collective bargaining rights of CUPE Members and act in good faith to reach an agreement that prioritizes both keeping students in school and the rights and respect of all workers
In our ongoing commitment to transparency around negotiations, we have made our presentation around our wage proposal, given Monday to the Crown & CTA public. The proposal is reasonable, affordable and necessary. We invite you to take a look.
Interesting Steve. $370 million in direct support but our proposals for a DECE in every K class & funding directed to increase direct supports via EAs, Custodial etc was…checks notes…unreasonable. Umm your costing shows our proposals cost less than these cheques. What gives?
While we stand up to ensure children remain in normal and stable classrooms, our government is increasing direct financial support to parents to $370 million.
#PlanToCatchUp
Serious question here… MOORE states we should “avoid vulnerable people”.
We all recognize that is absolutely impossible right?! We also do not want a society that discriminates & isolates individuals!
What we need is protocols & policies that keep ALL safe - regardless!
There is a real whiff of desperation here.
Don’t forget that Bill 28 removes the right of the worker to access the OLRB to intervene on our conflicts.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander right?

Well Nick. They wouldn’t ask about our last percentage increase ask bc we have never asked for a percentage increase.
Our message has been the same for 167 days.
1st CUPE said 50% increases or else we strike
Then, it was about the lowest wage workers, who have been offered 3.6% increases EACH YEAR FOR 4 YEARS
Now it's about the kids (& BRIBES to parents)
Anyone in media ask them what their last per year percentage demand was?
Why not?
