some professional news: today was my first day as a full-time editor for print and digital (and columnist!) at
@CNTraveler
✈️ 🌏 mostly just excited to regain my old Condé email from 11 years ago (and also for this new era/return to editorial) (and also health insurance)
for all the high-anxiety high-performing Depresseds out there: sometimes you just have to believe that your bare minimum is other people’s 100% and let that calm you down for a day or two
This is awful advice. Use your PTO, period. If you need time off, take time off. It's a manager's job/leadership's responsibility to build systems and workflows that work even when teammates are OOO. If one person leaves and it all falls apart, something needs fixing.
Spanish film producers and distributors (Filmax, Dibulitoon) literally made a film w/ Magellan as hero and Filipinos as romantic interests/understanding supporters/antagonists.........and they’re about to show this film in the PH..........put this colonialist garbage in the trash
Are you an editor at a magazine/publication looking for articles/essays *not* related to COVID-19? Drop your @ in the replies so freelancers can find opportunities beyond pandemic coverage.
It’s important to stay on top of corona info, but we can care about many things at once!
since we're all sharing flashbacks: 2017, conference room — HR specialist telling a room of mostly Black and brown employees that "you shouldn't ask about each other's salaries, that's disrespectful"
I got a second dresser (left) to match the first (right) and it did not occur to me that 1) the older dresser’s wood would have changed color so drastically after light exposure over three years, and/or 2) that the new dresser would have either changed wood type and coloring
a boy i went on a first date with this week graciously told me via text that he didn’t think we had chemistry which is absolutely fair!! i appreciate the honesty bc i can never tell if i have chemistry with someone bc i can force chemistry with a rock if i wanted it to fuck me
Mom's health took a turn recently. Due to Covid-19, I likely won't be in Manila when she dies. She tells me: Write through what's difficult. So I'm writing a travel novel (plot: mother and son on a round-the-world trip)—and wrote about it for

Chris was also involved in an HBO documentary called "Birders: The Central Park Effect"—here he is in 2012, celebrating the doc with the director Jeffrey Kimball and the late great birder Starr Saphir
In 2018, I began a book about sex & dating as a gay Filipino immigrant. Today, I'm publishing a memoir (and audiobook) of unlearning internalized colonialism and racist love—work that's ongoing and eternal. Let the record show: THE GROOM WILL KEEP HIS NAME
the immigrant dad urge to print out all emails from an airline and put them in a transparent yet colorful plastic envelope and bringing it to the airport while traveling
"The data released by Pfizer Monday was delivered in a news release, not a peer-reviewed medical journal. It is not conclusive evidence that the vaccine is safe and effective, and the initial finding of more than 90 percent efficacy could change as the trial goes on."
Breaking News: Pfizer said early data showed its vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19, pushing the company to a lead in the vaccine race.
Some professional news: I've been laid off from my role as exec editor

I'm shocked & sad, but proud of the work & growth I've done there for 4.5 years and eager for a fresh start.
i realized i am Not Doing Well when i thought "at least now that Mom's dead, i don't have to worry about anyone hurting her or killing her in broad daylight"
writer tip! if editors tell you to cut something—whether a line or paragraph or page—it doesn't always mean it's bad! we're often cutting for pace, clarity, etc., so save them in another doc for use later/elsewhere (what i like to call "send your darlings to finishing school")

the day after that, my manager pulled me aside and said what i did was wrong, that it could blow up in my face and deter people from working with me
worried it was true, i confided in my fellow brown co-workers and they introduced me to the concept of "tone policing"

i think one of the scariest lines in Fleabag is when she tells the priest “I love you” and he tells her “it’ll pass”

I am working on something new. Here, a few lines: “Whenever I open my book, I remember her, wherever she may be, always my mother. To her, I would like to say: My love for you shall live forever. And, in these pages, so will you.”
Rest well, Ma. I love you.
