Tree crickets chew holes in leaves, making megaphones or "baffles" to attract mates. I am studying the evolution of baffling in my PhD. A bit of phylogenetics, a bit of citizen science. Follow the link to my new project on @inaturalist

This project aims to collect data on “baffling” behaviour in tree crickets (subfamily: Oecanthinae). Baffling is a strategy used by males to amplify their songs. They do so by using their substrate,...

Iridescence is more common in mammals than thought, and always produced by the same mechanism! New from EON, led by PhD student Jessica Dobson https://t.co/WUVndL5ujQ

Iridescent coloration is a vibrant structural colour that is widespread in nature, but in mammals is thought to be limited. Although multiple rodent and Eulipotyphlan species have been anecdotally...

To document ~25 tree cricket species across the US, I request all nature enthusiasts to contribute and spread the word! Not from the US? Global observations are also welcome! Shoot any questions on my iNat (insectlavie) or email (apattana@vols.utk.edu

Our false head work is out! By analysing ~1000 butterflies, we found many traits at posterior end of hindwings evolved correlatedly, likely forming a trait complex w/adaptive function to dupe predators into thinking these traits together are actual head!! https://t.co/OpkT8p0CvL

Feel blessed to have played a small part in this amazing project led by Subhasmita! Happy to see it out finally!! Kudos to all co-authors 🎉🦎🌈
How do lizards talk? Using flashy colours and sexy moves, of course. But why have so many signals - especially when they're costly and attract predators? We explore the how and why in our latest paper: https://t.co/Hcyvzl77Sd

BREAKING: MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying. Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt. Here's what 4 months of data revealed: (hint: we've been measuring productivity all wrong)

To avoid predation by an invasive parasitoid fly, crickets on Hawaii are remixing their love songs for females but these escape plans might not be foolproof, at least not yet. My latest for @the_hindu is on an evolutionary arms race in real time. https://t.co/j2E6j1sYDY

Pacific field crickets in Hawaii evolved quieter songs to evade invasive flies, but flies adapted, illustrating a rapid evolutionary arms race driven by climate change.

(1/4) New publication alert!!! Certain species of snakes have prominent heat-sensing pits on their face, like this gorgeous Green tree python! But under what circumstances do these pits evolve? And what benefit do they provide? Photo credit - @DamienEsquerre
