There is a positive correlation between iconicity and concreteness ratings. Unlike what's been reported for spoken languages, iconic signs can refer to abstract concepts (via metaphor). Our results show how the manual-visual modality impacts different psycholinguistic constructs.

There is a weak correlation in #concreteness ratings with concepts skewed towards the concrete end of the scale. Concepts that are typically very abstract in spoken languages (emotions) are regarded more concrete in signs (emotion signs in BSL & DGS are articulated on the chest)

We find a strong correlation between #iconicity ratings for 234 concepts in BSL and DGS. In some strategies concepts are clustered around the iconic end of the continuum while 'acting' and 'entity' are more evenly distributed.

Any advice on how to choose a mike 🎤 to record conversations in naturalistic environments? We got funding to study #purehepecha + gesture but I've never had to worry about audio in my research! I have a Canon Legria HF G26 video camera. All suggestions welcome 😀
