Even though private companies like Yoti are highly certified & compliant under DPA/UK-GDPR legislation, the public are generally unaware of any additional existing agreements with central govt re: data access, and if Yoti have been subjected to a technical capability notice [TCN]

In order to use Yoti's consumer product alongside it's ID checker app, individuals must upload sensitive documents incl. biometric data, thus creating a de-centralised form of digital ID. The more people that use Yoti, the bigger target and honeypot it becomes for e-criminals.

Trust. Nothing prevents or stops retailers from requesting additional verification for age restricted products with a physical document, especially given the use of a simple 'yes' or 'no' by Yoti's ZKP setup. Retailers may wish to visually check DOB's as part of verification.

Smartphones can get lost, stolen, run out of battery, have a larger digital footprint, become infected with malware & can reveal even more sensitive PII about individuals as compared to traditional, specific physical ID documents.

The https://t.co/iq8FAnhgel digital wallet 'age assurance' feature & its 'Digital ID - pints in the pub' is delayed due to many reasons, but most of all - public pushback. Yoti are ramping up preparation with their new ID checker-app. Let's explore some things they've said..

Things do get a bit more interesting when you discover the involvement of Open Society Foundations funding - $430,000 in 2023 is quite a chunk of change for a UK ORG. https://t.co/SjcTMcPTkQ

The concerns about the e-Visa being used as a 'testing ground' for the general population, as outlined by the Open Rights Group et al, is understandable. But it is a bit of a reach to call the e-Visa a 'digital ID' in a comparable way to Labour's wider domestic proposals.

The e-Visa, formerly the Biometric Residence Permit [BRP], is limited & specific to *immigration status* & not accepted as ID for employment. There is a clear distinction between this scheme & Labour's more comprehensive ID plans for Britons. https://t.co/7WpiRz5HZf

The report comes from researchers at the University of Warwick and University of Leicester, working with Migrant Voice and the Open Rights Group.

The lord's final remarks were, 'this is about a select group of people before facial recognition technology'. Then why impose a surveillance 'dragnet' on the general public, impinging civil liberties & rights when there's other means to apprehend such a select group.
During a question on increased police use of facial recognition, the minister trotted out the usual 'if you have nothing to hide' argument. I asked if the government have any qualms about the impact of mass surveillance on our liberties and the right to privacy/anonymity. It

It's time for @UKLabour to read the room and stop rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship. Rather than 'resetting the messaging', they need a pragmatic reset that moves away from centralisation and towards a unique federated system for Britain. https://t.co/mHtAstCey3
