And scanning that much bigger temp segment is significantly slower than scanning the original compressed table. Even creating a compressed table upfront of that less than 50% data takes 13 minutes so net effect approx null. So not much to gain on that front.

Surely we want to save some time on that so put that scan in a separate CTE and let it materialize referring to that CTE from then on. Net effect: 10 minutes slower 😐 Why: The table is using compression, materialising the less than 50% data results in twice the size temp segment

Table compression can add interesting twists - real customer story from the other day: So we spent 20 out of 60 minutes in that huge batch SQL on scanning the same big table 10 times constantly applying the same base filter each time reducing the data volume to less than 50%.

Our trip through India was surely a unique experience in many ways. I'm deeply grateful for all the kindness, awareness, open mind setting and enthusiasm of so many people we met.
