I think what people aren't seeing about Optimus "giving away" the matrix is the immense guilt he must feel. I think in a lot of ways Elita is right. He abandoned Cybertron for Earth, and Elita represents that guilt for him. Giving up the matrix seems like penance for his actions

I love the unrelenting cruelty Elita has for him in these panels, it does a perfect job of portraying that she borderline resents him; she's HURT by him, feels BETRAYED by his actions. They're not what they used to be and that's abundantly clear in their current setting
