💙AFRICAN QUEER YOUTH DEFENDING DEMOCRACY💙 At #AthensDemocracyForum, Co-Founder, @omarvanreenen, bestowed the @KofiAnnanFdn #NextGenDemocracyPrize to this year’s laureate. “The award helped uplift our movement to resist democratic backsliding against state-sanctioned homophobia”

Based off the empowering work of queer youth in Namibia, from feminist activism to LGBTQI+ rights, I was able to connect & teach participants how to co-design youth-led interventions to strengthen governance and public accountability. Proud of the democracy strengthening in 🇳🇦

It was such an honor hosting a workshop at the #AthensDemocracyForum: “Building Youth-Led Constitutional Movements”. How can citizens activate constitutional clauses, engage courts and mobilize digital support networks to effect real change?

The vision of the Kofi Anna: a new generation of leaders carrying forward the struggle for freedom, dignity, and democracy. Grateful to have been recognized with this honor, but more so for the queer youth of Namibia who everyday wake up to build a better democracy for us all.

Saif from 🇹🇳 is the only Queer activist from the Global South on board. His presence carries the spirit queer resilience, as a community fighting for liberation in a post-apartheid Namibia, we firmly believe that Queer Liberation is intrinsically tied to Palestinian Liberation.

From a recent @afrobarometer survey conducted more than half (51%) of Namibians say they are tolerant towards their homosexual neighbors. So why are our Polticians passing unconstitutional anti-LGBTQI+ laws over bread/butter issues. @parliament_nam

Parliament passed Jerry Ekandjo’s 2 anti-LGBTQI+ bills in record speed. It was actually the fastest private members bill debated on/passed by the house. Didn’t even go to a committee for review. So Parliament has shown us, that they can work efficiently when it comes to hate

The world may be broken and ruled by monsters. but hope is rebellion, and I refuse to let go of it.

In Namibia, Parliamentarians can call queer people, demonic, satanic, incite violence towards them with impunity. The moment opposition MPs expose the ruling party MPs/Speakers corruption; decorum is used to silence them. Jeans will get you thrown out but not deadly hate speech

Homophobes will call queer people “un-African”, while we have been part & parcel and celebrated, as part of African culture long before religious colonialism erased us. Then also judge politicians with African cultural attire that doesn’t conform to heteronormativity. Hectic

In Namibia, it disproportionately impacts men. And judging from the vile homophobia that comes from our political leaders, patriarchal approach to vulnerability coming from traditional leaders and judgmental critics from religious leaders. The # 1 rate is a society that hates.
