Rare but illuminating example of ideas in economic development directly shifting policy -- Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi discovering Alice Amsden's research on South Korea leads to a new Ethiopian industrial policy.
(from Tom Lavers's "Ethiopia’s ‘Developmental State’", p.151)

Puzzled by this because the uniqueness of the Korean approach was not a downgrading agriculture & rural development in priority favor of industry. Their developmental state intervened heavily in agriculture as it did in industry, & useful linkages between them were established.

Flipping through the index of Amsden's Asia's Next Giant, the Saemaeul Undong (New Village Movement) is mentioned precisely once, and in passing -- might explain it.
