Matthews: misses a period in a must win game because his tummy hurts
Draisaitl: puts up 2 points per game against Edmonton’s biggest rival on a high ankle sprain
“Ken, Bill Armstrong just insisted he needed Bouchard in a Chychrun trade with no money coming back”
“Tell him I’m going to go get Ekholm for Barrie, Ginger Beef and magic beans”
Kane says he’s dealing with a sports hernia and has been all season. He’s hopeful to play but has needed to take some time off the ice late in the season to let it heal. Full participant today in practice.
I still maintain Koskinen is better than the general perception of him, but I will never understand how Chiarelli and the rest of OEG could think he was better than Talbot. Talbot was a guy who they ran into the ground and was primed for a bounce back with some rest
The ingredients to a 4-1 collapse
1)Dominate with an aggressive forecheck to get an early lead
2)Coach moves away from the successful forecheck to a defensive trap with a roster that’s not built to play that way
3) Give up 2+ quick goals/coach does nothing to control momentum
If you look at the Oilers’ playoff series during Dustin Schwartz’s tenure, they’ve scored a majority of their goals by targeting specific weaknesses in the opposing goalies’ technique. Those kind of prescout skills are essential when facing the league’s best in the postseason
Oilers reschedule games:
Feb 08 v. LVK
Feb 09 v. CHI
Feb 11 v. NYI
Feb 14 @ SJ
Feb 15 @ LA
Feb 17 v. ANA
Feb 19 @ WPG
Feb 20 v. MIN
Mar 7 @ CGY
Eight games and three sets of back-to-back in 13 days. Many teams will play often in very short period of time.

Via Oilers+, Campbell is testing a full set of Brian’s Gnetik equipment. This is a significant change, with the Brian’s gear being a lot stiffer which should help kick rebounds further from the net front
Mike Smith Post Mortem
When a goalie of Smith's age and with his starts talking about how training is a grind and he doesn't know if he has it in him to get ready for another season, that player is likely done as proper preparation would require full commitment for that offseason
I find it absolutely hilarious that most of these guys grew up watching Fuhr win ugly 5-4 but be the guy to make one extra save all the way to the HOF. Koskinen’s now 9-2, with good adjusted stats, but gets absolutely destroyed on any questionable goal
The NHL says there was no conclusive evidence that it was hit with a high stick based on the video they have. There is a chip in the puck tracking it at all times on the ice.
Why can’t they look to see if the trajectory changes in the puck tracking data timed up with the video?
Thompson got hurt late in the Vegas game against Calgary, making Quick likely to start Saturday night.
Quick reminder of what happened last time he played at Rogers Place
The crowd defending Tippett, blaming it on the roster construction, are forgetting that this is the roster he asked for in the off-season. The coaching nor the roster are good, but that doesn’t absolve Tippett at all
At the end of the day, Mike Smith have up 3 questionable goals (2, 3 and 4) in a 4-3 hockey game. Not many games are going to be won with that kind of netminding (Breakdowns coming tomorrow)
Holland calls the last game in Seattle the team’s best win with how they played and with the bottom 6 support. Marody/Griffith/Perlini are subsequently rewarded with trips back to Bakersfield or the press box while the under performing group gets rolled back out
In case you wanted to know how things are going, players in red were acquired by previous management and still here on those contracts or re-signed RFAs and players in green are pure Ken Holland acquisitions
It seems likely that Matt Murray ends up in Toronto, Darcy Kuemper with the Caps and the Oilers sign Jack Campbell
Stauffer said on Friday that if the Oilers had any interest in Murray, Kassian would have moved for him. Profiled the two UFA
Some thoughts if that doesn’t happen
If Skinner had been pulled because of his performance, Campbell would be starting game 6
But that was a pull to shakeup the whole group and I actually think Skinner was quite good tonight, so I think Woodcroft goes back to him Sunday
Rodrigue having a .924 SV% so far this season in the AHL is great, but in no way, shape or form does that make him a better prospect than Jesper Wallstedt.
Skinner coming out of no where to find NHL success as a starter doesn’t excuse that transaction either
This right here is why so many people dislike the Oilers msm. Before a rumoured move, no evaluation can be made because said move “needs to play out”. Then when the dumb move inevitably goes bad, there was “no way to know at the time”. And the cycle continues
@Archaeologuy
Well, I appreciate the exchange. Just seems your mind’s made up before anyone knows the facts. Good to have the courage of your convictions. Have a good night.
Tippett spends all year obsessing over the PK and still gives up 2 PPG in the biggest game of the year. The lesson: play your best 5x5 players with speed and skill
Skinner should (and probably will IMO) Game 5
He’s been the better option on the year and has been able to bounce back from rough performances. Campbell played an excellent ~50 mins but that doesn’t change the fact that it’d be likelier Skinner has a strong start

The
#Oilers
have signed goaltender Ryan Fanti from the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a two-year contract beginning in the 2022-23 season!
Fanti will join the

on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.
Stuart Skinner has a 4-0-0 record with a 1.25 GAA and a .965 SV% (the all time record for goalies with more than 2 GP) against the Flames in his career.
He looks to get back on track in another Battle of Alberta tonight
Smith does his job again, stopping what he faced, but what an absolute clinic by the Oilers defence.
The Vegas offence reminded me of the Tippett Oilers. All but 3 or 4 of the Vegas chances came from the outside with clear sigh lines.
Despite glaring holes in the roster, I think Dave Tippett has been a major part of the Oilers postseason struggles of late and has shown enough that to make it obvious that he won’t be the coach if the Oilers ever do make a run
A thread:
Campbell’s got a brand new glove here with an older blocker and set of pads.
Big change is that this one has a skate lace pocket compared to the previous nylon cord in his old one
RE Tippett and his contribution to special teams: Glen Gulutzan is the PP coach. He was hired a season before Tippett, and took the Oilers PP from last in 17-18 to 9th in his first year (18-19) and it’s been first in the year ever since.
Skinner was great tonight. Looked a bit rusty in the 1st but settled in to look super solid the rest of the way. The goal went through 4 layers of traffic and was tipped so tough to fault him there. The lateral movement and recoveries look improved over last season
The Oilers are taking advantage of Talbot reliance on RVH, particularly on his blocker side. McDavid goes over the shoulder on paddle down on goal 1 and then releases the pass the second Talbot gets into it on goal 2
He gave up 3 (one called back), but Mike Smith’s issues were compounding yesterday. Right now, his movement is inefficient, particularly his rotations, which leaves him behind the play, which means on the shot he’s reaching for the shot.
Seeing a lot of blaming the loss solely on Koskinen tonight. He was not good and was outplayed by Markstrom, but most of the GA were symptoms of larger defensive issues.
Thread breaking down each goal
Per
@csahockey
(via Woodley), since Knoblauch was hired, the Oilers defensive environment in top 3 in high danger chances against off the rush and first overall in high danger chances against at 5v5
Full season and since allstar, NSH was the worst defensive team in the Pacific bracket yet VAN managed 13 goals in 6 games
LA was the best defensive team over the year and EDM scored 22 in 5 games
EDM generated the most offensively, with sh% giving NSH more goals since allstar
I wanted to look at how last year looked in my goalie impact model. The results are below. For reference, here are the standings impacts so far this season. Skinner is at an 85th percentile performance. Campbell is a 1st percentile performance for the season
Not sure if this got picked up last night, but not only did Nurse have poor gap control on the Lafferty shot, but he actually tipped the shot up off an initial trajectory that looked to be shooting for a rebound off the pad. Explains Skinner's reaction
Assuming Price comes back before the deadline, if the Oilers are upgrading in goal they should be targeting Jake Allen.
However, Skinner/Koskinen have performed almost exactly at expected so an upgrade on the blue line would likely be more efficient at lowering the GA
@tyleryaremchuk
Pickard has struggled everytime he’s played a team with playoff calibre offence with any amount of rest. There’s an argument to be made to prioritize other areas of the roster but the backup spot is far from settled
Game day thread: 10/30 at Vancouver:
After a game on Wednesday with some great saves overshadowed by some horrible goals against, Koskinen bounced back in a big way. Enough big saves to match Demko
The media and fanbase totally didn’t panic about a goalie with a 923 SV% though!
The Oilers finished the regular season with a 50-23-9 record. Stuart Skinner started 48 times, recording a 29-14-5 record while Jack Campbell had a 21-9-4 record in 34 starts. Here’s how each goalie contributes to their record
The same people who want to trade Puljujarvi (.55 pts/gm in the NHL) due to a lack of puck skills want to sign Virtanen, who not only is a POS, but had a lower pts/gm (.44) in the KHL
I really like Rodrigue’s game today. A little late sealing the 5hole on the regulation goal and could’ve gapped his blocker forward on the Perfetti shootout winner but a lot to build on.
Game 70 Thread: Really don’t understand the people who saw Skinner poor last night unless they’re just watching the box score. 2 near impossible deflections followed by a massive save to keep it tied. Oilers were able to exploit Helle’s relative weakness
Carolina gave up a conditional 1st that's really more like a 2nd, a conditional 5th that only triggers if they win the cup, prospects 6, 7 and 9 in their pool (per Scott Wheeler) and a cap dump for Guentzel at 25%. Edmonton paid more for Henrique
By my eye, the majority of Smith’s “incredible saves” tonight have been chances created by himself on puck misplays or being completely out of position
Skinner's performance today was in the 89th percentile, saving 1.59 Goals Above Expected on 3.59 xGA (more than Saturday) in a win by 1, good enough for his 6th Stolen Win of the season. A phenomenal game from Skinner
Campbell finished the night with -3.17 GSAx and a 5th percentile performance on a night where the Oilers' offense would have needed a 32nd percentile game to win. It was the 5th consecutive start where Campbell was responsible for the "Lost Game"
Ilya Konovalov Post Mortem
After one year in the AHL, Kono is heading back to the KHL. There are quite a few people whose goaltending opinions I respect that were high on Konovalov, so I'll tread somewhat lightly, but I think there were some red flags in his prospect profile
Adin Hill mini thread
I'll write something more in-depth before game 5, but I quickly looked through Hill's last 5 games in the regular season and his start in Edmonton in November. Couple of themes showed up
