I've only ever used twitter to connect with people I admire and talk about my work, but like... Jesus Christ, at some point you have to just ask what the point is? Like, I don't need to contribute ad revenue to the guy throwing darts at me and my community. 1/1

That, lads, is fucked. But people need healthcare and that's currently the only way many people are getting it. I wish I knew a solution, other than to keep fighting for a government which will rebuild a robust NHS capable of providing all people in the UK with the care we need.

But when I imagine about someone in a similar situation to me, with complicated mental health, histories of addiction or mood disorder, so desperate for care that they shell out hundreds of quid, for a 45 minute conversation that touches neither of those things?

I’ve really, lucky. My wait was around two years, and my diagnostic process was thorough. I was informed of all the risks, and all my options for care. Now going through titration, I’m already seeing small improvements which could be life changing for me...

This wasn’t about making me jump through hoops. It was because I have a history of mood swings and depression, and ADHD has a high comorbidity with Bipolar - and a first manic or psychotic episode can be triggered by ADHD.

For context, my own NHS ADHD diagnosis took four psychiatrist visits and 10 hours+. Even after my psychiatrist confirmed that she believed I had ADHD, she wasn’t certain that it would be safe to prescribe me stimulant medication.

Complicated feelings about this. Both for those who sought private care due to unendurable waits on the NHS, now afraid that their diagnoses will be invalidated and lose care as a result, and those charged £1000's to be endangered by substandard care from private clinics🧵👇
#panorama's programme on ADHD has potential to do good - we all want ADHD diagnoses to well done & authoritative - but it can also do harm. It could: add to #adhd stigma; create a new stigma for ADHD with a private diagnosis; or undermine ADHD as a serious lifelong condition.
