It’s that time again when the OceanXplorer is in dry dock. In the Netherlands, OceanXplorer will be on land this month for routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections. Soon we’ll be back out at sea and heading towards UNOC, the UN Ocean Conference, held in Nice, France.

During our Around Africa Expedition w/ @oqfoundation we created the first ever map of this large seamount on the Madagascar Ridge. Our mapping and ROV dives provided invaluable data about this unique habitat, which can inform policy makers on how to better protect this ecosystem.

OceanX has been busy aboard OceanXplorer! 🌊 With @POGO_Ocean, 12 Early Career Explorers joined in Cabo Verde. It also marked the close of our Around Africa Expedition w/ @oqfoundation. In Las Palmas, 12 Young Explorers came aboard to dive into research, media, design & safety.

A new paper about hammerhead hunting habits has been published by @etspencer: In 2021, OceanXplorer was off the coast of Florida as @FIU PhD candidate Erin Spencer used biologging tools to study the 3D search patterns of these large marine predators.

This week aboard the OceanXplorer, we reached the waters of Cabo Verde. In collaboration with local scientists from IMAR as part of our Around Africa Expedition w/ OceanQuest, we explored the Nola Seamounts. We also had the honor of hosting Cabo Verde President José Maria Neves.

Whale spotting is one of the world’s most unique jobs, with a history stretching back to the days of whaling in the Azores. A job that once hunted whales now protects them. Pretty cool, right? Follow #OceanX for more incredible ocean stories.

[2/2] Studying these extreme zones is helpful for understanding how marine ecosystems and ocean biodiversity can change in the future. They also give a glimpse into what our ancient oceans were like before phytoplankton accumulated large amounts of oxygen. @OBON_Ocean.

[1/2] During our Around Africa Expedition with OceanQuest, the OceanXplorer passed over an oxygen minimum zone, also known as an OMZ. We had our Early Career Explorers on board in partnership with @POGO_Ocean, presenting a great opportunity to learn more about this zone & region.

OceanXplorer continues sailing for our Around Africa Expedition w/ OceanQuest, endorsed by @UNOceanDecade. In partnership w/ @POGO_Ocean we brought 15 Early Career Explorers onboard to explore this excitingly abundant zone. Each day has been full of research. @OBON_Ocean

[1/2] A new paper has just been published from our 2022 Red Sea Decade Expedition with @NCW_center. Shannon Klein and colleagues from @KAUST_News observed fish and lace corals in oxygen-depleted zones in depressions of the Red Sea’s coastal coral reefs.
