It feels a little surreal but my first paper is finally published! with amazing collaborators from across @UniofBath, @UKHSA and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, we investigated cationic biocide tolerance in Proteus mirabilis (1/11) 🧵.

I’m presenting my work on the role of LPS structure in biocide tolerance and crystalline biofilm formation in CAUTI pathogen Proteus mirabilis at #microbio23 today in the form of a rather unhinged poster - p055 come along for a chat! 🧫🧫

…Lucy Bock, Matthew Wand, Kazunori Ikebukuro, @GebhardLab, Mark Sutton and of course Brian Jones for contributing to this manuscript! A little shameless self promotion but I’ll be presenting a poster at #microbio23 P055 if anyone would like to chat about the data 🧫🔬.

In summary, we concluded that SmvA-mediated efflux appears to work in synergy with LPS mediated exclusion of biocides, to modulate overall susceptibility in P. mirabilis, and that virulence factors such as crystalline biofilm formation are also affected by LPS structure (9/11).

Finally, we assayed RS47 and its derivatives against a panel antibiotics and cationic biocides. Interestingly, LPS structure and SmvA efflux were found to impact susceptibility to all biocides assayed, but did not affect antibiotic susceptibility (8/11)
