             Mary Edmonia Lewis was born in 1844, the daughter of a Chippewa artist and a free Black man. Her sculpture The Death of Cleopatra depicts the Egyptian queen after she has taken her own life—an unusual subject, as most artworks represent Cleopatra alive.
