"Hey, what are these sounds? Are you dialling from that, uhh, receipt printer to the phone?", my SO asked. "Yes.", I answered sitting on the 8" floppy drive. Life here is a bit odd.

This evening I helped my neighbor to fix some electricity issues in his boat. Nasty boat with awful wiring, but I had a fun time.

@Dzelzcelamuz My daughter wasn't so impressed by the trains, but she made a small diorama in a workshop for kids. In the museum there's also a big working scene of train models, but I forgot to take a photo of it and I'm too lazy to search for the photo of other times I was there.

We also visited a @Dzelzcelamuz, a local national railway museum. It was a special day, a lot of trains located outside were open for visitors and some activities for kids were taking place.

My illusions about huge motor that drives such locomotive was shattered. It turned out that there's just a regular truck motor and most space in front is taken by big compressed air tank.

They're very open and positive. Kiddos were interested in how locomotive are controlled and an experienced operator answered every of their questions.

Yesterday I went to some railway themed activities with my kids. We visited @BDklubs, a former industrial railway that's now kept running by railway enhusiasts.

Unfortunately there are some oncleanable apots, but it's ok. The phone works without any repairs needed. Pretty aggressive bell, huh?

Yesterday I cleaned it properly and hope to get it back together this evening.

Mine needs some cleaning at least. But it's not cracked in any place so I hope to get it fully functional for my dial-up setup.

Here's the (not mine) video with the actual Siemens FeTAp-791. https://t.co/igZMR6okbo

Despite it having a local VEF factory logo, it's not made by VEF, but imported in early 90's from Germany and restored for sale in local post-soviet market. Upper sticker says that it was still used in Latvian ministry of transportation in 1996.

Today I got this phone. I was after it for some time because I wanted this green model to go with my green Isot modem and terminal.

Born to express my technical creativity, forced to finish other people tasks, because, obviously, following basic procedures takes too much time and finishing up all nuances are not worth the effort. :/

This transceiver alone needs 10 pairs of fibre to be used, so it's suitable only for local connections. I've seen pictures of a CFP transceiver with 10 different single mode wavelengths coupled in one fibre. That's how you can connect them using one fibre for each direction.

On bottom of the board there are additional electronics for control and diagnostics. The rectangular metal part is under the transceiver and helps to get heat away from it. Also, notice how many contacts are on the connector!

Well as I said, a lot of contacts. The transceiver module is connected to the base board using another thin adapter plate with spring shaped contacts.

The transceiver module is built in an interesting manner. The board is an FPC that's glued on a aluminium plate and bent around it. Parts on top side, contacts on bottom side. In second picture you can see two rows of small dots. These are transmitter lasers and receivers.

Inside there are ten driver chips visible - each for one transmit channel. In center of the board there is a transceiver module that's connected with external connector using a small optical cable. External connector is a standard multi-fibre MPO connector.

It's used to connect devices using 10x10Gbit lanes, so the total speed of this transceiver is 100Gbit. This particular transceiver is using ten pairs of 850nm multimode connections so it needs a cable with at least 20 MM fibres to connect two transceivers like this!

I had a thread on a various network transceivers previouly. Recently I got this monster transceiver! This formfactor is called CFP. Let's break it open!
