A javali I learnt through a recording of Bengaluru nagarathnammal given to me by Prof Davesh Soneji .I later found it was performed in the arangetram of Akshaya’s grandmother ,was surprised to learn that my maternal grandfather Swamimalai Rajarathnam had sung for her. (1/3)

Decolonising in the context of India means going back to Brahmin supremacy and normalising caste oppression. Because wasn't that the normal before the colonisers got here? Not surprised by all those savarnas doing decolonisation projects . #decolonise

For many women with courtesanal pasts in the Hindu religion, association with brahminism and the Hindu right has provided some relief, they have sometimes been able to practice their art and achieve success as artists. Lata Mangeshkar is an example of this.

This is Bharatanatyam and other CLASSical art forms today - stolen forms that were grafted on to bodies of women. from “respectable” castes in the 1930s and are today vehicles for militant Jai Shri Ram Hindu nationalism !

When questions about oppressors of one kind and the oppression of the guru sishya parampara are being spoken about, will there be questions about the oppression of the casteist origins and the present day realities of the dance fraternity?

The reason I am able to call out these powerful folks is ONLY because I have given up on wanting to dance or be part of their CLIQUE! I take it upon myself to make people see how horribly casteist the Indian CLASSIcal Arts world is ! That is all I want !

I am sure some of you know of the targeted bullying and casteist discriminatory behaviour I have been facing. The recent episode of a long running campaign by the website narthaki to vilify and denigrate me and my work has led to some academics drafting this statement.

I am from a Sudra caste, our men made careers outta teaching brahmin women dancing after dancing by our women was criminalised, history reduces them to being prostitutes, Social stigma is part of my lived experience, yet I have to fight social conditioning/ bias to be anticaste!

Don’t understand the obsession of Brahmin women who want to dress up as “devadasis”,who want to dance “sadir” &other “devadasi dances”of the PAST ,who want to create plays on devadasis from 18th century and act in them (full Brahmin cast )-the need to steward discourse 💯 SAD

Not only did we see videos of students at the Kalakshetra protest talking about sexual abuse , but some even spoke of being asked their caste backgrounds, being profiled and marks/opportunities being decided on this basis.

I’m from a caste background toward whom verbal violence and misogynistic language is used , without second thought - the B swear words both b**tch &b***ard are something that reminds me of how we live in a terribly dysfunctional patriarchy driven world . But I understand rage!(1)
