I am making an RPG inspired by classics of the 80s and 90s. It's set in a huge hand crafted open world and has a deep turn based combat system and a very non linear way to play.

I wasn't very happy with my original world map screen I did so this week I have been working on updating things a bit. Next on to expanding and adding animations to it!

If you grew up playing classic rpgs in the 80s and 90s or just love large scale rpgs then you might be interested in my game, Lair of the Leviathan.

While waiting for some music to come in I have been messing around with the world map, making it look a little nicer and adding in some animations. The water now moves.
Here is how some of the world exploration works and links up with the town location pictures I usually post. Still very much wip.

Today I have been working on adding in some more goblins.
I also made a steam post about enemy variety in my game and how I try and use it to keep turn based combat interesting and challenging.

The goblinknight. One of the 'secret' unlockable companions as you go through the story. I really miss the days of having totally optional companions players can find (or totally miss!) ala shining force or final fantasy 6

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who liked and reposted my trailer. I had never liked using social media before but I felt humbled by the positive support. None of you had to do that, but you did. It can be isolated out there as a solodev, so I really appreciate it.
My progress from 2021 when I started to now. I still have a long way to go but I can't believe I didn't just give up after that first run animation! That looks even worse than I remember!

This week I have been updating a few of the player sprites as well as the battle background to make them look a bit better than before. Still a long way to go but better than before at least.

? I love the channel by the way! It's the main way I keep up on interesting indie games.
I'm working on an old school rpg. I just finished my teaser trailer.

Dungeon battle screen WIP. I feel all the motivation draining out of my body. I didn't mind drawing the natural setting backgrounds and they took a fraction of the time this one has. This one is killing me.. I think I have found my pixelart kryptonite!
@pantaloon_boost
I'm making an old school open world rpg. I grew up playing games like this so I'm hoping there are a few of us older (or younger) gamers interested in something a bit different.

Looking at my steam wishlists I have noticed that a huge number are from Germany. Surprising! There is such an America centric view of steam so I wasn't expecting that.
Also, why?? Is there a demand for old school pixelart rpgs in Germany specifically?
5 year old: What are you drawing dad?
me: It's a castle..
5 year old: Hmm.... looks more like a rocket.
me: Well, it's a castle...
3 year old, 15 minutes later: Hey what doing dad?!
Me: Working....
3 year old: silence... watching... I like rockets too!
me: dammit!
@ArturSmiarowski
I love how you do things your own way. As others have said, there are plenty of games using flashy overproduced graphics or cinematics to market. I guess those games are 'good first impression' games but those kind of games don't interest me like games such as yours do.
The general advice from people is never use pixel art for your Steam store capsule but I thought I would give it a try anyway. I think it turned out ok.

@Groteskerie
Thank you! It seems more people from Germany and Japan are interested in it. I think I need to promote more in German too.
The Steam page is here
No Linux unfortunately. At least not yet. Hopefully a demo is ready soon.
@CrazyRetroGame1
I'd love to hear more about that too. It's interesting to read why people think they failed but I'd rather try and learn from both positive examples as well as negative ones.
@SockPuppetGames
I'll take a story with cutscenes like this over the modern way of using hours of static dialogue scenes any day of the week! This is great.
@JaRPG_LLC
I think your game looks good and you seem really genuine. Don't give up!
I get negativity can ruin your day. I'll have a lot of positive comments and it's always that one awful comment that gets to you and sticks in your head!
I wishlisted your game so that's one more!
@StudioDraconis
@erdbeerscherge
Thank you! coming from you that's a great compliment. I love your art. I've had your game wishlisted for a while. Looks great.
@JaRPG_LLC
Haha, oh no. But those comments help desensitize you so they affect you less and less. In a way it makes you stronger and it's great you're learning from it too.
Kero it up!
@InnkeepGame
That might have been a mistake... I think I had almost a hundred replies in a day! I learnt more than I ever wanted but everyone was nice. I thought a fetlock was some sort of new hair trend.. little did I know
@jnightx
Hey thank you! I don't know why it has done so well in Japanese compared to in English but I'm glad you could find it. It will be on PS5 as soon as I can.
@JaRPG_LLC
I agree! The general rule of fantasy. And never too many Dwarves ⛏
I'm glad you like it. I hope the horde thing keeps people interested and challenged and keeps variety up throughout the game.
@Groteskerie
I'm a total beginner. I started studying programming and art only a few years ago. I'm really glad people seem to like it.
I do. My game discord is
You can add me there
@arnoldsenph
Judging by my Steam statistics, I would be stupid not to. I think over 30 percent are from Germany. You guys seems to love these types of rpgs.
I would love someone to translate once I'm at that stage. Send me a DM.
@quasimorph
Thank you. I'm still learning as I go along so I'm glad people like it. Coming from you that's really appreciated. Quasimorph is such a great looking game.
@shinnari_nasubi
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. Yes I really want to mix both styles. I hope I can make something a little different and interesting.
@InnkeepGame
Thank you. I hope your game is coming along. I honestly can't wait to play it. Every time you post something it looks more and more interesting.
