Something I learned from 20yrs covering government:. One person’s “waste” is:.- another person’s lifeline;.- another person’s hometown infrastructure;.- another person’s pathway to college;.- another person’s road to a better life;.- another person’s future medical breakthrough.

RT @noahpransky: ☎️Most of us learned in grade school how the game of “telephone” is arguably the single worst way to transmit information.….

Roses are red;.Violets are blue. If social media's your top source of news,. an algorithm’s manipulating you.

2) In short, we have outsourced a large percentage of our critical thinking to algorithms. Every one of us. We are letting algorithms – that are not incentivized to inform, but to maximize profits through agitation – to be our gatekeepers for which news & facts we see.

At this point, as the quality of information on social media continues to fall, I'm hopeful it might help ppl recognize how bad social media is as a source of news. Then, maybe they'll realize how much better the info is from traditional outlets?. Hopeful. but not too hopeful.

IN CONCLUSION: Information from your friend/family/plumber is not the same as information from real news orgs. And abandoning the guardrails/gatekeepers that have provided quality information for generations will not result in a more informed public.

18) SOLUTION 2 - Resist sharing content from news aggregators, 2°-3° removed from original sources, even if you agree with the message. Instead share the direct reporting from people/orgs on the ground. Original journalism > secondhand opinions through someone else’s lens.

17) SOLUTION - stop simply consuming news sources we like, and seek out/consume opposing viewpoints too. Don’t trust an algorithm to pick for you. Many of us were taught in high school or college how to consume lots of info, then think critically. But many of us have forgotten.

16) But some of this is a product, according to research, of how digital devices have shortened our attention span. We KNOW the detrimental effect they can have on kids. Why do we ignore the effects they have on us?. ‼️There are ways to combat the death of good information. ‼️.

15) Look - this is a choice. And choosing to trust an algorithm – or a friend/family member - to tell you what’s important and what to believe is easier than going to multiple news websites or seeking out direct, first-hand sources of information. .

14) According to Pew, of ppl who get news from influencers:. - 30% “mostly agree” w/what they see;.- 2% “mostly disagree”. This is the result of algorithms pushing a different, yet specific, ideology on each one of us. And thus, creating multiple, distorted views of reality.

13) News influencers often:.- Don’t fact-check.- Don’t disclose conflicts.- Incentivized to speculate. So, they get it wrong – a lot. But ppl just accept their .500 avg. Yet legacy outlets, w/legal, financial, & ethical incentives to get it right, get trashed for batting .990.

12) EXAMPLE: @ProPublica's decision to NOT publish a salacious story about Pete Hegseth. ….a story that would most def have collected allll the clicks:.

1/ Here’s a story about how journalism works. Spoiler Alert: This is how we decide *not* to publish. We were recently looking at Pete Hegesth’s different statements over the years about West Point, where he has said he was admitted. First stop: West Point.

11) Journalists get criticized for filtering info before sharing it. but that’s their job:. - They confirm stats.- They ensure claims are legit & not created by some foreign gov’t.- They reach out to subjects b4 publishing, to ensure fairness. Each filter improves accuracy.

10) There are well-deserved criticisms for journalism too & examples of the industry’s blind spots when trusted to be the gatekeeper for good information. Journalists aren’t perfect. But here’s why they’re still a superior source compared to friends, podcasters, or influencers:.

9) Result: Most ppl no longer rely on info that’s been vetted by experts. They (you?) believe they can become experts themselves. But despite your great Googling skills - I assure you - you are not an expert on most things.

8) Most ppl are now content to live 2 -3° removed from truth:. 0° removed: reading reports from primary sources on the ground. 1°: consuming just a headline/social post from original outlet. 2°: consuming someone's story summary. 3°: friends sharing stuff they "heard somewhere".

7) A recent survey found Americans' top news source is not news outlets, but "friends & family.". Yes, THE GAME OF TELEPHONE☎️. We know how unreliable this is!. Yet every wk, some family member shares some outlandish link they got from some unknown source.

6) We share wild mistruths spread with ease & disregard. The simple solution is to “stop doing that,” but it’s more complicated. 🚨Because we’re all aware bogus information is so prevalent online…society has devalued the quality of all information, including the good🚨.
