A significant portion of your painting process should be spent on looking at your painting. Not doing anything, just looking. Thinking. Analyzing. Seeing what needs work and figuring out how you're going to do it before you get yourself into a mess.

I say this as an art teacher: a teacher can't force you to be an artist, they can just make the journey a little clearer and more direct.

Every artist is, essentially self-taught.
