Thank you to our member Gillian for speaking to @StephenNolan this morning and providing a first hand experience of being a social work in a family support team. Are you listening @RobinSwann_MLA @AineMorrison @healthdpt

@profsiobhanon 9. And for @NualaMcAllister Approved Social Workers are not medically trained to apply care to people detained under the MHO. The Stormont Assembly needs to come up with solutions to the ongoing mental health crisis affecting so many people and families and organisations. Ends

@profsiobhanon 8. Approved Social Workers have often been left for hours and even days on their own with people needing hospital care whilst a bed is sourced. This is exacerbated out of hours, where resources are more scarce. This is clearly not the Right Care Right Person ethos.

7. Only 16% of the Mental Health Strategy has been implemented. As @profsiobhanon said, this is a disastrous approach both to implementing a clear prevention strategy, but also for people who are acutely unwell requiring hospital admission and medical assessment and treatment.

6. The PSNI have been inappropriately used on occasions. Connecting acutely unwell individuals to the appropriate medical care, they are assessed as needing as quickly as possible, needs to be prioritised. But there remains a problem - a resourced mental health strategy.

5. Whilst a lot of the time people are admitted to hospital in a timely manner, especially in the Belfast Health Trust, there have been occasions in other Trusts where this hasn't happened. At times the PSNI has been used, because the individual is so unwell, they are needed.

4. If someone is assessed under the Mental Health Order as requiring to be detained in hospital it is because there is a substantial likelihood of serious physical harm to themselves and/or others. Therefore, they require admission for medical care in a psychiatric ward.

3. The Dept of Health has over the years, through its Strategic Performance and Planning Group (SPPG), cut the number of psychiatric beds before the pandemic. This has meant some individuals have been kept waiting for days on end for the appropriate medical care they require.

2. Nipsa's Approved Social Work members have been engaged in industrial action because of protracted bed waits - that is, there is no psychiatric bed for an acutely unwell individual to receive the appropriate medical care they require. This is a breach of their human rights.

1. There are many important issues being discussed in these interviews. We agree the PSNI spends too much time in ED departments, for example, for people acutely unwell. The issue remains shortfalls in connecting people to the appropriate medical care.

Dear @sinnfeinireland, @duponline, @SDLPlive, @uuponline @allianceparty @GerryCarrollPBP @TUVonline Can you please get it right! It isn't nurses pay or nurses strike, it is the all encompassing Health and Social Care workforce pay and strike. Yes, we read Hansard on the "debate".

@profsiobhanon Trade Unions must hold the Health Minister and Stormont Executive to account. Nipsa Branch 730's industrial action in mental health regarding Approved Social Workers, will need to be reviewed in light of this disturbing and dangerous admission.

The Health Minister is fooling nobody. That such a large funding gap exists is as @profsiobhanon says, a disaster for MH services and particularly those requiring support. This will have widespread societal repercussions that especially impact on those needing support.

Last week Nipsa submitted a number of FOI's to all 5 HSC Trusts on mental health services, linked to the MH strategy. We were about to submit an FOI to the SPPG specifically on the MH strategy. Coincidence? Irrespective, this is a shameful admission by the Health Minister.
Stormont's 10-year mental health strategy being scaled back due to lack of funds is absolutely devastating, says Northern Ireland's mental health champion.

To be clear @StephenNolan - whenever strike action occurs across the Health Service there is always derogations put in place, proposed by the employer and either agreed or amended by trade unions. It is a long standing process and often resembles a Christmas Day service.

Well done Nipsa's Patrick Mulholland putting forward the unions views on the IT disaster in the Southern Trust and that HSC staff still don't have a pay offer 👏
There are many IT systems across our Health Service - the biggest is Encompass, which has cost 100's of millions over the last few years. If the Southern Trust outage is the Encompass system, that should send shockwaves across the DOH and HSC. Stormont will need to investigate.
