In 2020, I read a news story about Carlo's beatifcation and was so fascinated that I wrote a novel about the bizarre and disturbing world of contemporary saintmaking. Yesterday, the Pope announced that Carlo will be canonised THE SAME WEEK that the book comes out. Like, what??.

Untrue. Only this morning I realised that I don't know nearly enough about the 1953 evacuation of the Blasket Islands to possibly progress with my new novel, in which the islands won't feature in any way.

A week since we revealed this pure banger of a cover for #OrdinarySaints and I'm still flying. Thanks so much to all the angels and saints who've pre-ordered, messaged, commented, shared and even read (!) since then. It's really meant the world to me ❤️

And this is the reaction to the moment of canonisation at the home Cathedral of some of the new saints. The novel focuses a lot on how wild this process is, when viewed through secular eyes. But this is a reminder of how much it still means to devout Catholics.

Incidentally, Pope Francis canonised 14 new saints yesterday. It's quite a beautiful ceremony - no one does these moments like the Vatican. Scroll to 1.25 for the best bit, and the moment my protagonist imagines herself into.

It’s official the Church has 14 new Saints. Just moments ago in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis raised to the altars the 11 Holy Martyrs of Damascus, martyred for refusing to convert to Islam; St. Giuseppe Allamano; St. Marie-Léonie Paradis; and St. Elena Guerra. Orate pro nobis
