#footballfridays From local teams like @hitchinbelles to England's @Lionesses who are set to battle it out to win the #WorldCup2023 on Sunday, women's football has had a long and eventful history. Read a little about it in the blog below. ππ https://t.co/qDj1H9US9b

3/3 The jug slightly aggrandises his victory though, as his 1895 election was unopposed! Hudson did not stand for election in the General Election of 1906 and his Conservative successor was defeated MP for Hitchin by the Liberal MP Julius Bertram.

2/3 The jug celebrates Conservative candidate George Hudsonβs victory in the General Election of 1895. Hudson had been the incumbent MP for Hitchin since replacing his Conservative Party colleague Baron Dimsdale at the General Election of 1892.

1/3 Our museum collection is home to many objects relating to politics in our area. From political flyers, to newspaper extracts and photos in the aftermath of political victories. One of the more novel ways to mark a political moment is our #Objectoftheweek

#objectoftheweek This bag was collected by a museum employee in 1983 from Bejam. Founded in 1968, Bejam was the leading supermarket in frozen goods, something very odd at the time! However, Bejamβs iconic reign came to a halt when it was sold to then much smaller rival, Iceland!

#footballfridays Did a Malaysian Prince πonce play for @HitchinTownFC ? According to this clipping Prince Yunku Ahmad Yahaya (aka Ronnie Hamid) once roamed Top Field. We would love to know whether this strange story is true. Does anyone remember Prince Yahaya/Ronnie Hamid?

Frederic Seebohm (1833 β 1912) bought the Hermitage, a house in #Hitchin's Bancroft, and gave half of it to the town to provide land for a road from Bancroft to Queen Street. The new road's prized box trees (from Seebohm's garden) became unsafe in 1919 and vanished one day.

#archaeologytuesdays It is all too easy to assume that when Domesday Book names a place, it is referring to a village or hamlet. Wellbury is a good example of the wild goose chases that historians & archaeologists have gone on in search of βlostβ places.

Domesday Book is a remarkable document. Less than twenty years after conquering England, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that in 1085 ΓΎam midewintre wΓ¦s se cyng on Gleaweceastre mid his witanβ¦ sβ¦

#objectoftheweek postcard of Brand Street in 1904 looking virtually unrecognisable from today! #Hitchin Town Hall and the future site of our museum are hidden by the Coffee Rooms Temperance Hotel and the Dog Inn on the left of the shot.
