Is it me or are all the friends and family who are featured on Love Is Blind THE WORST? I’d be so embarrassed to be associated with people who are so awful to my potential life partner (even if the way we met was dubious). The excuse that they’re being protective is a joke 😳.

Loved @HattieWillis_ opening talk for deep tech stage at #WebSummit2022 *chefs kiss* 😍 a motivating call to action for everyone to play their part to disrupt inequality in the startup funding system: “Entrepreneurship is an important leveller but can also reinforce inequity.”🔥

💡 All employees have power and can instigate change in their organisations when they mobilise. Ask challenging questions of your c-suite, such as “is it normal that our c-suite is so white?” or “who is missing around the table when making important decisions on strategy?”. 🧵6/6.

💡 Fighting racism is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. It takes time and it’s tiresome. Don’t let that make you complacent or pessimistic. 🧵5/6.

💡 You can’t expect to improve DEI in your organisation if you don’t measure equality data. Track your numbers and continually review and adapt your DEI programmes based on the data. 🧵 4/6.

💡 Hiring for diversity is not enough - companies need to have inclusion at the heart of what they do and ensure that all people in their organisation are able to thrive. 🧵3/6.

💡 The reason DEI matters is because, without it, key voices will be missing from the table when designing key products and services that impact everyone. We need to bring these people into the room and these discussions. 🧵 2/6.

My top takeaways from my favourite talk from day 1 of #WebSummit2022 - Building structures for racial equality with Kim Smouter and Vanessa Sanches:. 🧵1/6.

So while it’s great to see so many more talks on DEI at Web Summit this year than when I last came in 2019, I’d really love to see the dynamic of the audiences change at talks on these important topics, too. 🧵6/6.

If we’re going to create a more equitable & inclusive society, everyone needs to contribute. But if it’s primarily women and people of colour that attend these events and learn about what they can do to help, how is that going to have the impact needed? . 🧵5/6.

This is why I’m disappointed. If the majority of companies today are run by white men then we NEED white men to help lead the way towards creating more equal societies and workplaces. And this starts with listening and learning from oppressed people. 🧵4/6.

The talk before was full and on another important topic - “How blockchain tech saves lives in Ukraine” - but, when it ended, more than half the room left. Those who stayed or joined for the racial equality talk were mainly women and people of colour. 🧵 3/6.

The last talk I saw was called “Building structures for racial equality” and it was a discussion between Kim Smouter and Vanessa Sanches. It was such an important discussion, brilliantly facilitated and with lots of actionable takeaways. So what’s the problem? 🤔 . 🧵2/6.
