While passive heating has been repeatedly shown to increase BDNF levels in young adults, our study is the first to demonstrate an age-related reduction in the BDNF response to prolonged passive heat exposure. Shoot me a DM for access if you're interested in reading more! 🤓.

We found that although circulating BDNF concentrations increased from baseline in both young and older adults exposed to 9h of dry heat (40°C, 9% rh), end-exposure concentrations were considerably lower in older than young adults. ⬇️🧓

It’s been a big few weeks for @HEPRU_uOttawa students (and now alumni)!. I learned so much about real-world application and mixed-methods research from working with @emtetzlaff on this one! Have a look at our paper on heat strain in the mining industry 👇🏻🔗 and her other work 🔥.

Check out our latest article in @MSSEonline👇🏻. There’s been so much passive heat acclimation literature published since finishing my thesis on the topic, and it was exciting to jump back in and see how the field has been advancing!.

This study was the first to assess the BDNF response to passive heating in older adults. Our results provide a direct assessment of a novel health/physiological outcome of exposure to conditions experienced during indoor overheating in a heat-vulnerable population 🧓🏡☀️.

Across all conditions, BDNF concentrations at end-exposure showed a positive, linear association with both air (previous figure) and body temperatures. However, the BDNF response was not related to HSP70.

We found that circulating BDNF was elevated by ~28% at the end of the 36°C (the extreme heat event condition) vs. the 22°C condition (the control or "air-conditioning" condition) - though the 26°C and 31°C exposure responses were not different from that in 22°C.

So, we evaluated the ambient and body temperature-dependent responses of BDNF in individuals 65-78 years of age during daylong (8h) exposure to four indoor temperatures, ranging from 22-36°C (all 45% rh)🌡️We also examined the relation between circulating BDNF and HSP70.

First, we wanted to find out if BDNF increased during daylong exposure to hot ambient air in older adults, as has been shown in younger adults during short, intense bouts of passive heating (e.g., sauna, hot-water immersion, water-perfusion suits).
