Yes! Funk is born of the idea the repetition is a learning process, and that a vamp or groove reveals something about itself each time it’s played. It’s about digging in; playing parts with conviction and momentum, avoiding stasis. it’s about details and discipline.
Funk is a rhythmic system of tension and release *over time*, but often less-appreciated is that it feeds on the conflict between some players exercising maximum restraint and others exhibiting maximum expressiveness, which occur *simultaneously*.

i got to hear Wayne Shorter rehearse his piece “Terra Incognita” with the amazing Imani Winds wind quintet. At the end of the rehearsal, he asked the ensemble “do you think it’ll sound different each time you play it?” They said yes, to which he replied “then rehearsal is over.”
