Every year, more states legalize #cannabis or permit medical use. Yet the federal government still views it as an illegal drug. Absent federal oversight, states have enacted a patchwork of policies for testing, quality, & safety, roles usually fulfilled by @EPA, @US_FDA, & @USDA.
NEW: After assessing the myriad regulations in U.S. jurisdictions where #cannabis is legal, Leung et al. identified “an urgent need for a unified regulatory approach” to protect public health from contaminants. ➡️ https://t.co/uckKVRKFiF

My latest on regulation and risks of #cannabis contaminants: "A lack of rigorous, universal standards for regulating common contaminants has significant implications for public health, write the authors of a new study in @EHPonline." #environmentalhealth

The World Anti-Doping Agency can't seem to shake reefer madness. 💨 Last month, they ruled that THC will remain banned during competition and at levels in urine tests that indicate frequent use outside competition. Read more:

Hey, it's my latest column for @projectcbd. This one covers recent research into the #neuroprotective properties of #cannabis -- including not only cannabinoids but also terpenes, flavonoids, and other compounds.

Marijuana can cause bronchitis, but a moderate body of literature suggests distal airway/parenchymal lung disease doesn't occur; [it] doesn't cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease & likely doesn't cause lung cancer, distinctly different from tobacco.

Human beings have used marijuana products for centuries. Relatively recent data showing extensive cannabinoid receptors, particularly in the brain, help to explain the impacts of cannabinoids on...

"Psychedelics & their associated practices are given unconventional mystical meanings by some high-profile tech entrepreneurs, & these meanings are integrated into belief systems & philosophies which are anti-democratic, individualist, & essentialist."
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
The history of psychedelia within the New Left counterculture often implies a cultural alignment between psychedelics and progressive values or the promise of radical communitarian social reform. In...

More evidence for the benefits of 1:1 THC:CBD cannabis. You can still get high and will have better recreational and therapeutic outcomes. I promise.
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Overall, the study demonstrated that the THC/CBD-equivalent cannabis induces less state anxiety than THC-dominant cannabis.

A big hell yes to this column. (Other than the amanita muscaria image.) If you're interested in psychedelics, give it a read and some thought. https://t.co/XqjKmUpjSG

"Harmful chemicals emitted from wells increase levels of air pollution in nearby communities. Exposure to air pollution has also been linked to low birth weight. Water contamination caused by spills on & near well pads could also be a contributing factor."

Is THC performance-enhancing? The science says no. What's more, current @wada_ama policy can produce false positives (meaning no intoxication, but still over the limit) if previous #cannabis use is too frequent or doesn't stop soon enough. Read more in my latest for @ProjectCBD.

Thanks for the story @Mary_Biles, inspired me to make a healthful+delicious cup of hot chocolate this afternoon using organic cacao powder, pinch of organic sugar, & splash of organic milk. Lifelong chocolate lover but #TIL that #cacao contains #anandamide & two analogues.

“The trouble is, LSD attracts unstable therapists as much as it does the neurotic patient. It gives them an intoxicating sense of power to bestow such a fabulous experience on others.” Sidney Cohen 1963. Rarely discussed, but possibly #psychedelic medicine’s greatest threat.

Athletes can always partake of their “inner cannabis,” but when it comes to herb, weed, or extracts from the cannabis plant, Olympians and participants in hundreds of other sports organizations around the world still have to be careful.
