Allowing protests is a grave danger for despotic regimes: protests could turn ugly/topple them. But the Palestinian issue was/is/will remain "the issue" in Egypt, Algeria & the rest of the region. Don't conflate regimes—that survive mainly thanks to Western weapons—with people.
