And there was still the occasional blunder. One waggish employee asked if Claudius would make a contract to buy “a large amount of onions in January for a price locked in now.” The AI was keen—until someone pointed out this would fall afoul of the US Onion Futures Act of 1958.

Cato Institute, Cicero Institute, you'd think at some point people would name their conservative institutes after someone who didn't lose everything they believed in and had to commit suicide

More papers should include a “Things We Tried That Didn’t Work” section. DeepSeek R1 does this too, and it’s incredibly valuable.

apologies to all, I am reliably informed by my marine veteran former boss that Col Jessup was in his Dress Alphas and not his Dress Blues. Looks like Nano Banana Pro couldn't handle the truth.

If you'll be on B6 289 tomorrow to San Diego I'm planning on reading this pdf then. Come say hi and we can have a reading group by the midcabin soda fridge a couple of hours into the flight.

The interesting thing about databases to me is that it contains a microcosm of the entirety of computer science inside it. DBs and OSes are two ends of the same design space (running lots of complex concurrent programs inside). OSes choose to leave the design space to the
