This!!.When instructors in my dissertation study listened to understand student thinking (as opposed to listening to correct, as so often happens in classrooms) students felt seen and that their mathematical work was valued.
Listening is one of the most powerful teaching and learning tools an educator has. To be heard and felt is humanizing, liberating even. More listening by educators would radically alter so many learning interactions and spaces.
