i feel like this is the main distinction between older fandom culture and the current "only canon matters and everything else is slop" mentality. we didn't grow up with any canon rep so we know how fandom and shipping matters
Some of y'all didn't use fanfiction as a way to explore your own sexuality because you grew up in a conservative environment where gay relationships didn't exist or were straight up demonized and it shows
