Your daily reminder:
No, Critical Role didn't invent the Combat Wheelchair for

. I did, and Matt very kindly asked to use his platform to promote it. It's very hurtful to see folks praising a show for creating something it didn't actually create! Don't spread misinformation!
Regarding Peter Dinklage's (extremely valid) criticism of Disney with regards to Snow White, I once again highly recommend folks check out and read "Disfigured: On Fairytales, Disability & Making Space" by Amanda Leduc. Ableism in fairytales runs much deeper than you think.
Really love that the plot of the Witcher is just "feral man who doesn't want to be the main character finds out he is, in fact, the main character and hates it"
Geralt of Rivia & the Importance of Disabled Protagonists
A Thread.
Geralt of Rivia is disabled.
That statement always surprises people, even fans of the series. But it's true. It's just that people only remember how Geralt is shown in- 1/20
I adore the Witcher fandom because the show is like "Here's Geralt. He's a big burly buff man here to be grumpy and fight monsters and kill people" and the fandom is like "Soft boy. Here are 12 million edits of him wearing flower crowns."

A quick guide for new folks here about ableist language and language changes!
1) Don't say 'differently abled' or 'handicapped'. The term is 'disabled'.
2) Disability-first please! Say 'a blind person' NOT 'a person who is blind'. Person-first is outdated and was a concept-

I came out to my parents yesterday.
About how I've been feeling, my new name, how I want to be perceived. I'd been putting it off for over a month now. I didn't know how they'd react.
But they were accepting - very accepting.
I'm Mark. I'm their son.
So, hi! I'm Mark!
About Jaskier: a short

thread.
He seems cowardly, but he really isn't. Think about it, he sees Geralt, a big scary man across the room, knows he's a Witcher who are hated and feared, supposedly more beast than man and what does he do?
Befriends him.
Hey, remember to thank your DM(s) who work so hard to build a place/world you can bring your stories and characters to life in. Don't overlook what they do for the group; a kind word of encouragement or just saying what you liked that session means an awful lot.

I'm so exhausted.
All I did was make a wheelchair and some folks have decided it's the end of the world.
No one is making you use it.
Yes, I thought everything through in its design which is why it's based on impact sport chairs.
Shut up and take your ableist shit elsewhere.

I understand that people mean well, but please for the love of god, stop telling me to read the wheelchair items in Pathfinder's Grand Bazaar and Guns & Gears.
I know about them. I was the one that wrote them. Paizo hired me to do that officially for them.

If the new 'OGL' goes through, I will be pulling all Combat Wheelchair rulings regardless of their version off the web entirely. Version 4 is currently on hold and will likely be scrapped if WotC aren't stopped. I won't let WotC have any legal right to my hard work to-

WotC: Sorry guys, we rolled a nat 1 on this one!

The most bizarre thing about seeing some people claim Geralt "talks too much" is watching them completely ignore the fact that Geralt laid out his entire life story to Iola, a woman who'd taken a vow of silence, and he literally talked for 5 straight pages of just dialogue.
And this is no hate to Critical Role. I'm very grateful for their support and Matt even talked about and promoted my work on his twitter, rightly crediting me as the creator. This is me just asking for folks to realise that though the chair is on the show, I was the one who-

*Dagen Underthorn* is Matt's creation. The *Combat Wheelchair* is NOT.
Thanks for understanding and take care! 💜
Y'all don't know how hard it was to keep quiet about this!!!
Thank you
@matthewmercer
and the Crit Role team for using the combat wheelchair in your game! I am beyond humbled 💜♿💜
Dagen is going to be their guide. Mighty Nein, if they need his help, just come find him. He moves in a chair of scuffed metal and wood, slanted wood affixed to it sides with various tools and plates bolted to it.

I've been saying it for years, but D&D should change its 'blinded' and 'deafened' conditions to 'disoriented' because players and DMs don't seem to understand that the condition of 'blinded' or 'deafened' isn't the same as being legally Blind or Deaf/HoH.
It's a quick fix- 1/4
I also want to put out there that I'm doing a complete address of mechanics to play blind/limited vision and/or deaf/hard of hearing spellcasters in D&D 5e. It will cover *everything* from combat to AOE and targeted spells as well as a section on roleplaying.
This will be free.
D&D is a co-op game, in which we weave fantasy tales for our mutual bliss.
If someone wants to play a hero in a wheelchair, for example, uphold their bliss, especially if that hero reflects their real-life experience.
We're all happier when we support each other like this.

Be prepared for tomorrow as I will very likely be pulling the Combat Wheelchair from off the open Google drive it is stored on. If you want to download it for private use in your homegame, follow the links. DON’T PUT IT ANYWHERE ONLINE.

Me: Book Geralt is such a sweet and gentle man.

7) Remember, language is constantly in motion! It's a living thing. Be open to changes and be aware that sometimes you'll mess up - even I still get terminology wrong from time to time! When you make a mistake, apologise, and ask how you can do/be better going forward!
💜♿💜
3) Don't say 'wheelchair bound'. It is ableist and doesn't account for ambulatory wheelchair users! Additionally, wheelchairs are not confining, they are freeing and give a lot of disabled people independence!
4) 'Cr*pple' lame' & 'r*tard' are slurs! Do NOT use them. However-
pressed on us by able-bodied people in the Disability Studies field. It comes from the idea that you should 'see the person not the disability' which is gross. However, older disabled people may prefer person-first language. If you're unsure of a person's preference ask politely!
I'm unsurprised but still downhearted at the level of vitriol that came from the D&D community yesterday just because a disabled person dared to make a wheelchair for the game. But I'm moving on. I've muted those threads because ableists aren't worth my time.
I've just seen some confusion going around and wanted to address it so it was clear to both fans and just ttrpg folks in general! I hope this clears things up! 💜
(And if the Witcher TV show gang are ever looking for an experienced disability consultant with the same disabilities as Geralt, I'm more than happy to offer my services!)
I will never let you forget that Geralt of Rivia, renowned monster hunter, was scared of a Higher Vampire, not because of its nature, but because he thought it was a banker come to tax him.
Geralt has committed tax fraud canonically and lives in fear of being discovered.
As a bi person the LGBA doesn't speak for me and will *never* speak for me. Being against trans rights is not only bigoted, but also serves to disregard the work the trans community's put into advancing LGBTQ+ rights since the beginning.
The LGBA should lose its charity status.
some disabled folk have reclaimed 'cr*pple' and may refer to themselves and their disabled friends as 'crips'. If you aren't disabled, this is not you word or term to use.

Why is it important that Geralt is disabled?
It adds a lot to Geralt as a character and a protagonist. When you think about Geralt of Rivia, you think about a strong and capable (if sometimes reluctant) hero. 9/20

Fun fact: Mobility aids in ttrpgs that serve only to allow a disabled character to do *everything* an able-bodied character can do isn't 'overpowered'. If you think that then no character you play should have glasses because correcting your vision is 'overpowered'.
Hey yo, apparently 'controversial opinion' but representing more people in The Witcher isn't "ruining" or "damaging" the franchise in any way. Some of you really missed that message in the franchise about how damaging it is to treat anyone as less than a person and it shows.
