when a teacher claims their students are reading The Odyssey what they really mean is their students have to highlight and scribble down trivial “insights” 4 times per page, turn in the book at the end of every week, and be graded on the mere completion of this pointless task.

yes these works are good, and well-educated 14-17 year olds are capable of understanding/enjoying them, but often curriculums and teachers conduct themselves as heavy-handed punishers so the students will naturally reject and preemptively give up on what is asked of them.

we read most of these books my freshman and sophomore year of high school but they were taught in such an pointlessly drudgerous and forceful manner (ex. you must annotate each page 4 times) that many of my friends abandoned reading as a practice entirely.
Starting to label and pack the kids’ school supplies. Here is what my daughter will study in integrated humanities this year (10th grade).
