When soils are saturated or rain events occur, the muck and nutrients runoff and pollute rivers. The top 5 constituencies are all in England. Agriculture is the largest cause of river pollution in England, all regions in England but one are in nutrient surplus. The Top 5:

How much manure do NI factory farms produce?

We produced this research for @UKSustain , @friends_earth and @ciwf . 🤓 All areas of England are in nutrient surplus, river health is declining across the UK and agricultural waste is the most common form of pollution preventing river recovery.

Our Muck Maps reveal for the first time the spread of factory farm muck across the UK. We found that up to 33,450 tonnes of manure is produced in the UK every day! When this is spread on over-saturated soils, it washes into waterways and causes pollution 💩🐟

Method: We indicate fields most likely to be spread with muck - using farm locations from DEFRA, livestock populations from @ciwf , and a literature review into transport distances from factory farms to farmers’ fields. Field locations from @UK_CEH More:
