Chicago kid turned Doctor, passionate storyteller weaving diverse journeys, positive energy, and the worlds of good eats, education, music, and fitness
I moved back home in Jan.
Cousin Barbara wanted to have a family dinner to celebrate my being the 1st in the fam to earn a doctorate.
I told her she really didnโt have to do anything.
Cousin Barbara, a retired elementary school teacher, sent a text with dinner details.
Canโt wait to share this with our scholars. I need them to see people of color playing extremely well as a reinforcer that they can do the very same thing.
To my first year teachers who couldnโt wait to be on winter break but canโt stop thinking about their kids โ- congratulations! Youโre arriving! Itโs a normal feeling. Continue to get your rest, and embrace your growing love for your kids.
Highlight of my day, teaching 8th grade Reading ๐ค
Using chapter 4 of โA Mango -Shaped Spaceโ, SWBAT interpret moments of a character's contrast/contradiction.
The contrasts and contradictions signpost asks that we (as readers) stop and ask โWhy is this character doing that?โ
Just finished my version of

Iโve organized time to:

Last Friday was my last day as Principal of Drew-Freeman Middle School, and it is an appointment Iโll always cherish.
Iโm grateful for this next journey where Iโll serve as the Acting Instructional Director for Middle Schools (Cluster 9)!
My best friend and I normally spend a day or so planning for the upcoming school year; heโs a principal, too. We would normally meet in a city, hit a coffee shop, and knock out the work.
This year was just waffles and no work, and allโs right with the world.
Dallas as storyteller:
A little over a month ago, I found a role aligned with my goals and skills. I took a faith leap, flew in and out for the interview, and now preparing for my last week in the DMV.
Chicagoland, to thee I return.
Take risks, have faith. Journey with me.
Iโm not going home for the holidays this year. My mom overnighted a box of my favorite holiday treats...
- Sweet potato pie
- Peanut Butter cookies
- Pound cake
- Beggars pizza
- Homemade candy

I just finished my 5th yr as a school principal, and I still love the work. Iโm also the last school leader of this physical building, as a new building will be built over the next few years.
Iโm proud of our work - I look fwd to our continued growth and success.
Go Drew!
I really enjoy being a middle school principal.

โExtra is a sense of humor, a deep, abiding love for students, a clear-eyed sincerity and earnestness that builds trust. Extra uses tech or gaming or poetry or music. Extra is any means necessary. Extra is every child, every day.โ
Iโve not seen my dad in more than 20 years. I decided to change that tonight. Going to surprise him this evening. I share cuz itโs never too late.
Stay tuned ...

I need a break.
I was blessed to have the same secretary as an elementary school principal, middle school principal and for a few months as principal supervisor.
This afternoon, we said our goodbyes and she gifted me with my favorite pick me up, peanut butter cookies.

Iโm what you call a โvillage kidโ. I was raised by an amazing mom and my Ts.
Before leaving home, I had to see my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Walton.
My goal is for my kids to feel an ounce of the type of love and care that my teachers provided for me. It made a difference.
Iโve had quite a few moments like this where I see/hear evidence of improved culture & climate.
Much like Mr. Clark, I get quiet. Marvel at the moment.
Say a prayer of gratitude, and still continue to raise the bar.

My mom has three kids.

- Iโm her favorite.
She made banana bread with walnuts and overnighted it to me from Chicago.

We celebrated Hispanic Heritage today at DFMS. I was asked to do an intro video in Spanish. I took French in HS and college, so one of our scholars and Mrs. A. had to teach me. Overall .... not so bad. ๐ค

I love my ma!
Ever since I started teaching, she picks up supplies she thinks Iโll need for the school year. Iโm home now, and she said, โLook on the fireplace. I got that for you.โ
Still makes me smile ๐
Moment of gratitude: I called my first grade teacher to make sure she was okay. It was a major bucket filler for both of us. Doesnโt matter how grown I am - I still have a profound level of respect and love for the woman who taught me how to read ๐

I never really wanted to be a principal or an English teacher.
Growing up, I wanted to be a first grade teacher ๐จโ๐ซ - mostly because my first grade teacher was an insanely positive force in my life.
On this day in 2016 (and a favorite memory) - As an elementary school principal, I really enjoyed learning with my kindergarten friends; there was never a dull moment ๐ค
Memories make me ๐โ On this day in 2014 - I was an AP.
The RELA teacher let me borrow her class to teach a few lessons using one of my favorite novels, โThings Fall Apartโ.
Hey! Some kids actually look forward to Monday because theyโre around people who love them; they might even find comfort in set routines and high expectations. Donโt greet them with a negative attitude. Leave that at the house.

Watched another great doc that refocused my โwhyโ. The doc discusses:
- Teacher quality / effectiveness
- School segregation and educational inequality
- School reconstitution
- The impact of culturally sensitive learning environments
- Student voice
Itโs on Netflix.

A surprise after church. I was one of Joshuaโs high school teachers. Heโs graduated college and is on his way to DC for a major internship. Super proud teacher moment.
Yesterday evening, our senior leadership team went to

Today, we met and unpacked every system, structure, procedure and protocol to ensure we are narrowing opportunity gaps and celebrating diversity.

- Provide context, resources and time for teachers

- Meet with staff before the day ends

Letโs be awesome today.
I appreciate when this picture shows up in my memories. It provides perspective.
This was the first day of my first year of teaching on the south side of Chicago, and I was late picking up my 6th graders from the gym.
Itโs the journey not the destination.
I learn a great deal about education from my Cousin Barbara. Talking to her is one of my favorite things to do when home.
